Linux/bash Question: how to eliminate/change colored text in terminals

I use a machine with Red Hat Linux and bash, mainly via vt100 text-only terminals (no X-Windows, KDE, etc). There's a color scheme that uses some weird colors to identify directories from ordinary files, from executable files, etc. I'm trying to find where this colors are defined so I either disable the colors or change them to colors that are easy on the eyes.

Please let me know if you know where these color setting are.

thanks
