Linux applications.

Hello,

I'm planning to use Linux for a while, probably Ubuntu, and I was thinking of asking about
some of the programs I usually use in Windows and if there're similair programs that are avaiable for Linux and how I can find/install them.

MSN Messenger Chat Client
Player(s) for Mp3, Avi, Mkv, Mpeg2... etc
And also where I can find codecs for divx, xvid, most of the codecs, maybe a codec pack avaiable?

PS. I also read something about diff kinds of applications for kde/gnome, and I'm very new to the Linux OS, but from what I've seen I kinda like the Gnome look Which I think is standard in Ubuntu maybe? .DS

Please read www.ubuntuguide.org

ubuntu does use gnome. Kubuntu uses KDE. Its up to you what you pick, you can still run any application.

If you use kde, use kopete or gaim for instant messaging. Both can connect to msn. If you use gnome, use gaim for instant messaging.

Mplayer or Xine for playing movies. You should have no problem finding any codec's you need with the above URL.

For music, if you use kde try amarok. It is like Itunes interface. For gnome, you could use amarok or try rhythmbox. But for a winamp style player, use xmms.

On Dropline, that is what is used, but it doesn't support a lot of things, basically it's easier to use xmms.

Development of xmms is now way beyond beep, which will probably be dead within this release.

yeah i was always afraid that beep would fizz out... too simlar to xmms but with no tangilble benefits except some might like the menus better (like me). oh well, xmms is great as well.
