so,

have been venturing out in linux for a while now, and have never been able adjust my resolution. Finally I want to do something about it. I notice that the Video card driver was just the standard Red Hat 7.3 GeForce 4 (generic) driver. So, I downloaded the RPM's from Nvidia, and got them to install properly, and working. Now, how the hell do I get my resolution changed? I started XF86config, and went through the setup for video cards. I noticed that it detected my Video card as the GeForce 4 Ti4200 which is correct. I went to probe the card, and it came back with an error. I chose to ignore, and went along. I selected a few higher up resolutions, and completed the setup. Went to "startx" and it black screened, but did not freeze as i could press ctrl-alt-del and it would kill system. So, now i am at a black screen each time, unless i go into interactive mode. Has anyone ran in to this problem, or any advice that you can give????!!!!

thanks all,

mcgrath

I don't suppose you backed up your /etc/X11/XF86Config file before you started tweaking, did you? Even if you didn't, the RH program probably did one automatically - check out the /etc/X11 directory and see. Failing that, edit XF86Config by hand - if all the config program did was change your res, you should be able to find those entries pretty easily and delete them.

Check the readme for the detonator drivers. There's some pretty specific steps you have to take as far as modifying your xf86config file. After you get those done, just add the "1024x768" "1280x1024" and whatnot entries.

YEAH, got it to work late last night. for some reason, when ever i edited xf86config, and then ran setup, the drivers would go back to original values.

wierd.... anyhow, seems to be working now

thanks
