Linksys WRT56G ver.6, Xbox360, & Ghost Recon AW

I just bought these items yesterday & am having some issues while playing GRAW on the 360. First of all, I am using a Linksys WRT54G ver.6 router and running 2 PC's and the 360 off it. I have zero experience with routers so it may be the source of the problem.

Anyhow, I get dropped out of games on a regular basis...and by that I mean I have yet to complete 2 games in a row. I have a decent amount of PC knowledge and have noticed no problems with my PC's other than the wildly varying ping reports in my PC games on this ISP's connection.

My suspicion is either a) I need a static IP if I don't have one already, b) might need to open some ports or something with the router???, or c) have no clue what it could be. My guess would be c, but I bow to you guys' experience on this one because I don't want to fix 5 things trying to correct an issue someone else already knows the answer to.

I have no idea how the 360 multiplayer works, but if people need to connect directly to your machine (rather than both of you connecting to a server), you will definately need a static IP.

b) might need to open some ports or something with the router???

It wouldn't work at all if it needed ports opened and you hadn't done it.

c) have no clue what it could be.

C could be a problem with the router... I don't like the WRT after v4, it's purely an attempt to save money by trading crappy hardware under a respected name. I'm not saying the things don't work - they do - but they are quite crap. Try plugging the 360 directly into the modem.

Pr0d1gy, first and foremost, try to upload your router to the latest version of the firmware. Check *carefully* to make sure you're downloading the right version. The firmware that came with the WRT54Gv5 apparently sucked huge, and the newer versions suck less. Perhaps you have the older version, and the newer version would help.

I would suggest that you follow the threads about DD-WRT flashing on the WRT54Gv5 and above. I would not recommend you do it yet unless you're feeling brave - the proess looks quite risky. But the reward is breathing new life into your router.

I strongly doubt MS would be foolish enough to design the 360 to need a static IP for anything. It is after all targeted at home users.

Well I guess it has the same problem as the v5 and stores connected IP's for 5 days, meaning it will fill up super fast when playing Live & give you problems. Do yourself a favor & research routers before buying one, because I could have saved myself a week of problems if I had done so. I'm gonna grab that D-Link 4300 that has GamerFuel & be done with it. Thanks for trying to help guys.
