I am running Satori 4.0 on my WRT54g. I have to say the amount of features are impressive and I would recommend this to a more competent user. I say that because the DHCP Daemon croaked on Sunday and it took me three hours to fix since it wouldn't willingly give out IP address to computers. That's a risk of custom software!

There's no difference between the firmware for both routers. Both use the Linksys DMA drivers normally found on the WRT54GS (only) and both have the option for SpeedBooster. SpeedBooster does only work on the WRT54GS model though.

Is there a way to backup the Linksys firmware in case Sveasoft isn't quite to my liking?

No, it's not possible to back it up. However you can download another copy of the original firmware from Linksys.

Both versions of the firmware have the option to increase transmit power to 84mW (up from the default 28mW) with the web internace. However if you telnet in so you can access the Linux Kernel you can increase the transmit power up to 200mW. Be careful going that high though, it's a very YMMV feature. If you do that I would recommend subscribing to the forums for support since I haven't gone above 48mW. I don't want to fry my routers brain. :)

I use the sveasoft firmware as well. I use it daily on a WRT54G and have a test/play WRT54GS. The firmware runs perfectly on both and I strongly recommend using it. The vpn server and qos features alone should be enough to make anyone install it. :)

PorBleemo: nice new(?) sig. I hadn't thought of doing something like that...

About as fishy as PorBleemo's offer to give out binaries. Unless he's offering source as well. ;)

A link to the src was provided. No concerns beyond what I have for sveasoft. ;)

PMs away to satisfy n0cmonkey and his legal OpenSource paranoia. :p

The policy for pre-release firmware is different. You can also choose to redistribute pre-release firmware under the GPL. You must also offer both source code and binaries as with the public releases. Should you choose to redistribute pre-release versions however, your subscription rights terminate and you will not have access to the Sveasoft forums or future firmware pre-releases afterwards.

I'm a FOSS license freak. I admit it. ;)

Not so sure I like the Sveasoft situation. Oh well, GPL isn't really my thing. ;)

to get better signal strength and transfer rate. Before the upgrade, the signal strength was low and 5.5-11 mbs and after the upgrade its still the same, as if nothing has changed at all. Is there something in the settings that I can change to improve this??

Boost the XMit power under the Advanced tab in Wireless. I would keep it under 64mW for safety issues. Keep in mind that this is very YMMV and you could zap your poor little routers brain doing so.
