There are mixed reviews on the quality of this device, the general consensus is that you need to buy an antenna to get any decent performance out of the thing.
I got one and it seems to work fine in my relatively small APT. I took it over to my brother's house and he has a ranch without much interferance. It worked pretty well there too; 2 bars at about 350 feet. Not bad with just an internal antenna.
IMO. YMMV.

Same here. I use it as my main router since it takes up very little room (and it fits very nicely in this little stairstep, cube type, wall hanging shelf I have. Since I don't plan on taking it with me anywhere, I got an Airlink 10dbi high gain omni-directional antenna for it. Then I got two D-Link directional antennas for the desktop PCs that will be connecting to the WRT54GC. My wireless network works very, very well.
All of this cost me:
$16.99 (WRT54GC from Office Depot - $3.00 off for turning in empty ink cartridge)
$4.90 (Airlink 10dbi omni-directional antenna on sale at Fry's, no MIL required).
$4.90 x 2 (D-Link directional antennas on sale at Fry's, again no MIL required).
I have wifi access throughout my entire two story home with this setup. Even my DS-Lite can connect without any problems and I have MAC filtering and WEP encryption on in the WRT54GC.
