Linksys WRT54G vs WRT54GL

Hi all,

I am trying first hand at networking my computers that I have in the guest room and one I have on the main floor of my house.

I am deciding between these 2 Linksys wireless routers and the only difference I see is that the wrt54GL is Linux based and may have a few more secure protocols for wireless setup.

I am wondering if I need that or the basic wrt54G will do.

Any thoughts on this???

There is a distinct difference between the two. The WRT54G v8.0 (the newest revision) has a 240Mhz processor 8MB of RAM, and 2MB of flash memory. (revision 6.0 and 7.0 have the same specs except in processors, in which they both have 200Mhz processors but from different vendors, 6.0 from Broadcom, and 7.0 from Atheros).

The WRT54GL uses the same 200Mhz processor used in the WRT54G revision 6.0, with 16MB of RAM and 4MB of flash memory.

In the end, the WRT54G is only good for about 8 simultaneous connections, whereas the WRT54GL is good for about 64 connections.

In the end, I'd definitely choose the WRT54GL. Having DD-WRT on it is great. Whatever you do, don't get the 7.0 revision WRT54G. It's not compatible with dd-wrt and freezes all the dang time. I was sorely unimpressed when I happened to find it was the version my gf's grandmother's house used. It froze all the time and was horridly slow. Chopped off a whole megabit off the internet speed too. Pathetic router. If you choose the WRT54G and found you got a 7.0 (and there's still a LOT of those in the retail channel), return it immediately.

The WRT54G past v4 is a Vendor attempt to cash on the Model name and save manufacturing cost.

The WRT54GL is basically a slightly enhanced d WRT54G v4. While v6 to v8 are a different animals in the same coat.

No matter what if Linksys is your thing it worth paying a little more for the GL.
