the native WRT54G V5.0 firmware 1.06 has the same ability as DDWRT.

You're right. I just downloaded the manual. It looks like the Linksys guys
copied the interface from ddwrt. Interesting.

How whould this stop your son from bypassing your router while you are away lol

Yes, the DDWRT firmware gives you the ability to:

1) Assign specific IP addresses to specific computers via the MAC address
2) Prevent specific IP addresses from accessing the internet
3) Block access to websites based upon URL or keyword
4) Block specific services, such as bittorrent or AIM.

All these access restrictions can be limited to specific IP addresses, specific
hours, and/or specific days. You can set up to 10 filters, and turn any of
the 10 filters on or off individually.

My son hates it. I can turn off his AIM via any computer in the house.
Using no-ip.com, I can even turn it off from the office.

Here is a web page (not mine) which shows the interface for
setting up these restrictions:

Access restrictions via DDWRT

This not really related to a "Hot Deal", so please PM me if you want any further
information.

Why would you even want one of these? You can get a D-Link 524 for $10 when its on sale, its currently $41 - $25 MIR + $5 shipping = $21 at newegg. Better firmware, I think it looks better, and its cheaper. Why get one of these linksys routers?

This is really meant of more of a reminder to get your homework done than to prevent
him from going to naughty websites or strictly enforcing some sort of internet ration.
It also prevents him from playing games all night on weekends after I go to bed.

The router and DSL modem sit on a small wire shelf, about 6 inches from the ceiling
in the utility closet. He could get a ladder and bypass the router, although I am not sure he
would know how. He could also takes his Mom's laptop or maybe even guess the
router password.

Raising a 15-year-old son is such a joy.

read up some linksys boards and you'll see linksys products have a history of portforwarding and other issues.

I really like using HyperWRT (Thibor) on my WRT's. It can be used to convert a WRT-54g V2 thru V4 to a WRT-54gs. It adds some of the features of DD-WRT but is much more stable. The things they leave out aren't things I need anyway, i.e. Chilispot. I'm not running a Hotspot from my house. Also, I have not found another G router yet that gives me the coverage of my WRT-54G's and I have tried many.

pretty much, if you want the version you can use the third party firmware with, try the one WRT54GL model.

Also the vxworks version sucks. really seems to limit throughput which isnt the case on the prior version.

Thank goodness I'm still more tech savey then my 13 year old - although he's convinced that my 25 years experince in the industry pales to his 5 years of surfing & gaming playing !

I think I remember my father being clueless at that age also :)

Remember that the Speedbooster is only going to help when transferring information
between 2 computers on your local network. If you are downloading information
from the internet, your internet link is going to be the bottleneck. The fastest cable
speed that I have seen for home service is 10 Mbps for high-$ cable service. Most
people are slower than that. Someone probably has a connection faster than
10 Mbps, and will want to post and brag about it, but they are not going to be a typical
home user.

Even the old "B" standard routers did 11 Mbps, and I was still happy with my old "B" Netgear until it died a few months back. Standard "G" is 54 Mbps.

Of course, all these numbers, both internet and router, are theoretical maximums, and
not likely to be actually seen.

The Version 5 Linksys router should do fine your Nintendo DS and your Tivo.
One thing I don't like is that the DS can only deal with WEP security. I had
to back down to a lower level of security so my son can play Mario Kart on the
internet. All the thieves probably use my neighbor's wide-open cable connection, however, so not that big of deal.

Thanks, your post wraps up most everything nicely. My home DSL speed tests out at:

"Your current bandwidth reading is 1534.60kbps which means you can download at 191.83 KB/sec. from our servers."

So my laptop could only download at 1.5Mbps correct?

I wondered why the speed was 10 to 100 times faster when using local hot spots. Damn.

Is it easy to switch from WPA to WEP and back from when my son wants to Mario Kart via WiFi?

Yes, 1.5Mps is it, but that is pretty good for DSL. My DSL is less than 1/2 that.
You must have "pro".

Switching from WEP to WPA is easy from a router point-of-view. The problem will
be if you have devices attached. A laptop would have to change as well. Not
sure about a TIVO, not experienced there.

Yes we pay $15-$20 extra a month for the faster speed. Qwest says we are only 300 feet from the hub or node for your neighborhood so we can get the fastest speed available for only an extra $150 a month, what a deal! This speed handles my home business, my kids playing Star Wars Battlefront online and whatever my wife is downloading fine.
