Same question here
Why not just put PCI card in the server instead of buying expensive access point?

My experience with the 802.11b cards was that using an access point gave me higher speeds and better connectivity, even with the access point in the same location as the system with the card in a PCMCIA adapter. The access point should have a better antenna. I would also not be surprised that the access point would have a higher power output, but I haven't read the specs.

Yes, you CAN put in a PCI card and use a "software access point," or simply run in AdHoc (read:peer to peer) mode. Or you could even bridge the wireless to the ethernet card on the server to get to the Internet.

But an access point is the best way to go. The antenna's are better quality.

Is it CompUSA policy to pricematch a non-advertised price at
a local B&M store, or is this going to be at the whim of the
manager?

They will pricematch, but they will CALL to verify price and that they are in stock.

Is the comp usa rebate available online or do you have to get it in store. The manager told me that the price match was all i get. No 30 off rebate.

I've been using the wireless PC cards at work (testing some wearable computer applications) between a portable 233MMX/2MB Video Xybernaut wearable computer and a Dell (~800Mhz) PC. The Xybernaut has a USB camera and we've been streaming video to the Dell using the Microsoft Media Player and Encoder but have been getting terrible results (1-3 fps and 1.5Kbs thru put). I'm not sure if it's the wearable PC limitations, MS Media Player or the Linksys wireless system that is limiting factor. The Linksys software is showing 11MBs and all the settings are correct. I tried sending data and not video and I get speeds of 8MB/s. I haven't tried the Access Point, just got it yesterday. Any ideas?

compusa rebate is in store, you need to pick it up there, it should be on their "rebate wall". it ends 1/20/01

I've picked up two of these from CompUSA with a pricematch. I had to go to two different CompUSA stores as each one only had one card. The first one spent some time trying to figure out how to get out of the pricematch, but I used the receipt from the first one to easily pricematch at the second.

hi..this place is really great....im new to this stuff and was wondering....

i found only thge apple airport hubs have lan and modem support, so i can use it while travelling as well....but. i am a pc laptop user... i check the apple site and as expected they dont mention anything about PCs. so i assume the software they provide cant be used by a PC. so how would i install the thing, and use the build in modem if i get a 802.11 complient pc card for my laptop.

how so i set it up . i saw someone saying they use a combination at work...

how would i go about using this.

also is there any other hub with a modem built in. i just wanna be able to do my work when travelling etc with one computer, my laptop...so i dont want something i need to attach to another computer....

thanks in advance

I got some questions here guys...
I live at the most 250m from a university wireless access point. Would I get service where I live?? I guess its worth a shot. Free access to speeds greater than my 56k modem.
What do you think?? Sould I go for it or not?
