I think this is a product that hasn't been released yet and outpost.com is accepting pre-orders? The wireless access point alone sells for $269.95 and the 4port dsl router costs $99.95 after rebate. I was looking to get both, so why not get a combo solution for less than what the wireless access point alone costs? Does anyone know if this is a good price? how much is it supposed to cost retail?

edit: diman found the same product for $234.88 (see below)

That is a very good price for both a WAP and a router, however unless you want to be an experimenter on the bleeding edge I'd recommend you wait until a few others have tried the unit.
For instance 3-com, SMC, and Maxgate have recently introduced similar devices for a slightly higher price point. All have some compatability problems. For more info check out Practically Networked.

I recently purchased the SMC product which compares to this one... basically does everything this one does plus includes a print server.... picked up from computers4sure.com, was 279, less a $20 off on $200 coupon which I found at t*chbargains.com - shipping was only 6 bucks, nice unit. And you can get it NOW.

Does Linksys make good products? Is this a safe bet on a pre-release purchase?

This is a good deal on a combo unit. However, I have no regrets in NOT buying a combo unit, even though it would have saved me money.

I have SMC's 7004BR 4-port switch/broadband router. I am extremely happy with its features and performance. I also have LinkSys's WPC11 wireless access point. Also, pleased with its performance.

In my case, a combo unit would not perform as well. This is because my office, where the router is located, is a "dead zone" through which 802.11b doesn't work well AT ALL! With two separate units, I was able to run patch cable through walls and situate the access point OUTSIDE of the office so signal loss is never an issue.

This may be a rare circumstance, but consider it before you buy anything...

Then again, I paid $250 for the Linksys access point ALONE. For ten bucks more, to get a 4-port switch and broadband router? w00t!

Here's a link to buy.com for the same item for a few bucks less (252.95). I don't know how the prices compare when shipping is added?

Anyone seen the USB Wireless network interface for this? I mean the network card thing that hooks up to USB to work with this? I'm getting one of those book pcs for the living toom and I need it to be usb wireless. I want the SMC but they don't have a USB wireless netowrk interface. ohwell.

Wireless technology is pretty nice. However, you have to realize that if you have a couple 2.4 gig corless phones in your home that you will have some problems. I am going to wait for the 5 gig band to be standardized before I go wireless. Besides, CAT5 is so much faster. :D

Most of the devices are designed so there is minimal interference with other devices. Many of the WAP's are DSSS - which means they skip around frequently.
Also - you can always stick with 900Mhz phones and save $$ on the phones.
I'm looking at having to share a cable or DSL modem with 5 users, all who might want to use it at the same time. The throughput on the cable (down) is at best 1Mbps. Two of the users are on laptops. I will either have to route wires through floors and walls for three upstairs bedrooms and a living room or go wireless.
I already have 4 access points on thinnet (coax) in the basement and one middle floor room. This provides up to 10Mbps potential speed to share one line that runs usually at 0.5Mbps.
With a WAP and router for $260, and cards for $125 I'm going to be able to quickly provide access for all. Even better yet - with an IBM T20 it will be real nice to cut "the umbilical cord" (discard the thinnet).
