Not really. 11MBS on cable or DSL is pretty darn fast. But your lucky to even get 3MBS downloads out of cable.

I think about the only thing a 54Mbs speed would be good for is if you trying to dump 10gigs of mp3's on your laptop or something like that.

#1 reason why I bought a NetGear Router (B) series for 20 bucks? Because my wireless laptops have built in (B) not the (G). So it would cost a lot to upgrade plus it would just add another usb box or take up the only PCMCIA slot left. As soon as (G) starts becomming the main stream then it will be wise to spend the extra 100 bucks.



 
Plus, the officical rating of G has been lowered to 10-20 mbps, not 54mbps anymore. There were stories about it on Slashdot. I still feel safe investing in B technology since everything new is supposed to be backwards compatible for a long time.

I was reading the reviews on this product from amazon and it seems that many people have problems with this product. (lockups, disconnections, etc.) Should I wait out for a firmware fix or just indulge right now?
 
I have installed 3 of these units and they have been rock solid for me, while I have had much less success with Speedstream, Dlink and SMC. Just my experience
 
I have a question about this, maybe someone can help me.

Do you need a broadband connection to use this? Cable internet is not available in my area yet, but I would like to have a wireless network, and then be able to attach it to the wireless network once it becomes available later this year.

Just wondering if a cable internet connection is required, or if I can still use it with a wireless card and still use the wireless internet fuctions.

You do not need a broadband connection to use this.

However, if you're going to use it primarily to share files between PCs, you should be aware of the relatively slow speed of 802.11b. B is great for Internet surfing -- as someone noticed, you're not likely to do better than that on your regular "wired" connection. However, for moving big files between computers, you're going to notice a significant speed difference between 802.11b and 802.11g or 802.11a. (Neither will be anywhere near as fast as a "wired" connection.)_

If you're looking to invest in a route and think you will get broadband soon, I think this is a smart investment -- so long as you realize the real benefits are in the Net connection, not in sharing files between computers on the network.

 
I was planning on using it to share my dial-up connection for now. As long as it works like a regular wireless network, I should be able to do this, correct?

I also have installed oneat home and a few others for friends.
All installs work fine and have had no issues.
Mine runs 24/7 has yet to drop s connection.

is yours updated with the latest firmware? if so/not, what firmware version are you running? thanks. I may be purchasing this soon via BB or amazon
 
I just picked one up at BB for $69.99 minus $10 rebate. No problems so far (altho it's only been running for a few hours) Setup was a breeze.
 
update:

alright, after posting, i've been having trouble with the wireless connection between the router and my dell 600m centrino laptop. the router can't seem to maintain a connection with my laptop for more than 20 minutes before dropping. must have jinxed myself 🙁

i went to the broadbandreports.com forums and it seems others have had problems with this router (befw11s4 version 4) dropping connections, stalling, etc.

i'm going to return it and go back to my netgear mr814.
