Linksys Router to Netgear Router Connection Problems

Hello, I have been having trouble connecting my Linksys WRT54GC wireless router to my Netgear WGR614v6. Both have updated firmware. I have followed the instructions that I found online and the setup still does not work. I intend to use the netgear as an extension to the range of my Linksys in terms of wireless connectivity and extra wired ports for that room.

The Linksys is my main router and is hooked up directly to the Cable Modem. My personal computer is hooked up to the Linksys by a standard cat-5. My laptop is communicating wirelessly. I have a standard 50foot Cat-5 cable hooked up to the Netgear router in the other room (the cable was tested to work perfectly fine) by using just the standard LAN hookups and not the WAN or Internet port on the Netgear. Since the linksys ports are such that it does not need a crossover cable, MDX or whatever, I am using a standard cable.

The netgear has DHCP disabled, and its IP is set beyond the range of the Linksys router's IP range.

When I plug the 50 foot cable into the netgear normal port, the light does not turn on signifying that it "is working". If I plug that same 50 foot cable into the back of my second computer, it works fine.

Thanks for your help, and please use simplistic language as networking is the bane to my existance.

I understand that either or both the Netgear and Linksys are auto-MDX capable. But just to eliminate that being an issue, I would see if you could get a crossover cable and try that first.

Sadly, that is one of the 4 guides that I have gone through that didnt work :(

They are all about the same. This really should be pretty simple but, in this world, somehow the simple turns all screwed up :p

I will try the crossover cable. If it doesnt work, ill just return it to Radio shack and think of something else :/

Any other ideas out there?

I have a linksys and DID need the crossover.

Just take it 1 step at a time, see if they talk to each other and go from there. Afterall, if I got it to work...

Oh whoa, ok, I shall go buy a crossover immediately. I figured it had the MDX thing and it would just "work".

The routers do not see each other when hooked up with normal cable, so i felt crossover cable would be the next and only "shot in the dark". I shall test this out tomorrow.

Well what do ya know! It was the crossover cable that fixed it instantly.

So, lesson learned:

Even if your router supports MDX ports, you still NEED a crossover cable when hooking up two routers together.

Thanks so much guys!
