Linksys Router + Netgear Switch Problems

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 Router w/ 4 port switch built in. I just got a Netgear FS608 8 port switch so I can share files and web connection with the downstairs machines.

I have a straight through cable connected to the uplink port on the Linksys (Port 1 was left empty because it is shared) and to Port 1 on the Netgear (have also tried 3 and 8). The Netgear is supposed to have auto sensing and auto uplink (so I shouldn't need a cross over).

Everything lights up so I know the cables are firmly connected. While on a machine connected to the netgear I can't see any other machines let alone get on the web. I also cannot ping other machines around the house.

On a machine connected to the linksys I cannot see anything on the netgear nor ping anything on the Netgear.

I have tried autodetect ip addy as well as assigning my own of 192.168.1.107 (also tried 192.168.1.108) 255.255.255.0 with a Gateway of 192.168.1.1 (my router's addy).

I am running out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried plugging into port 1 on the Linksys rather than the uplink? The autosensing on the Netgear may be making it try to function as an uplink when it shouldn't. Proper connection for hub to hub is uplink on one switch, regular cable, standard port on the other. If both ports are in uplink mode, a standard cable won't work.

Also, link lights usually do come on even when a "backward" connection like uplink to uplink is made.

Ok I have narrowed it down to a settings problem on one of my machines I am trying to connect to the switch. Even though netgear says I did not need a cross-over I did and it is connected to the uplink on the linksys and port 1 on the netgear. I plugged my laptop into the netgear and had no problems seeing the other machines and browsing the web. So I know it is a settings problem on the one downstairs machine. I have tried letting it pull its own IP but that doesn't work. I have also tried assigning it one and that doesn't seem to work either.

Was it working before? If yes, you can put the problematic computer on the Linksys, and move on of the other ones to the Netgear switch.
