Toshibe PCX 1100 cable modem
Linksys 4 port router
2 Win98 computers

I'm not anexpert at networking, but I know a lot...but I just cannot get connected through modem. My gateway and static IP can be pinged. My network works. I'm sure I've tried every config in the Network settings. Powercycled my modem countless times. I did notive that an error stating that my Nic could not be renewed/released. Is this a problem? Seems like I can't go through my modem. Router setup was simple but still cannot connect. Anyone have similar problems?

I had similar issue for a few seconds. Except I have the SMC router. I had to do a release all then renew. Try looking at winipconfig from run. You should see your IP.
I assume you have it set to dhcp.

Perhaps you have to call @home and give them the mac address of your router. I have a friend who uses cable with Media One, he had to do this after changing nic's. This is done to help prevent people from steeling cable data service.

Yeah, Yoshi has it right. AT&T (Media One) must know my MAC address or nothing will work. Otherwise, people with cable TV could get free Internet (assuming there is no filter on the line).

Actually you have a couple options. First I would say turn off all external DHCP and just set yourself fully static then you don't need to worry about it. The problem is that your numbers can change and if they do you'll have to call tech support to get them again. Does your router have MAC emulation ability? I know the linksys i have does and I set it to broadcast the mac of one of my computers nic's so no one notices I'm running the router. You're last option is to call @Home. It'll be more than a little tough because we're not supposed to support any networking, including routers. But if you lie a lot really well and convince them that you're mac is the mac of the router, then have them do a repush, wait 2-4 hours and release renew from your router it should work fine.

I'd just go static though, far easier and it keeps you running when DHCP hiccups (which it seems to do every few days in some locations).
