I am trying to set up a Linksys HPNA Cable/DSL router, and of course, nothing works. Well, I shouldn't say that, since I have everything connected correctly, and the LEDs are active. I have a Toshiba cable modem connected to the WAN port via a Cat5 cable, the power cord connected to the power port, the main computer connected via the LAN port, and I have one phone cord going from computer to router via the HPNA NIC, and one from the router to the phone outlet.

I can see the other computer on the phoneline network in Network Neighborhood just fine. I can browse it, copy files to and from it, but I can't do the following...

Run the web-based setup utility at the address http://192.168.1.1, even when I disconnect the modem from WAN.
Access the outside internet.

If it matters, I am using Earthlink Cable Internet over Time Warner cable lines, and using XP Home on both computers. I don't know what to do, quite frankly, so if anyone could help me out with setting this up, I would GREATLY appreciate it.

HHmmm.. I have a similar setup except I use a Netgear RP114 router and a Netgear PE102 ethernet to HPNA bridge. Cable is TW-Roadrunner. Works like a charm, make sure to run the XP networking wizard on the PC with the HPNA connection and choose the option
' this computer is connected to the Internet through another PC or residential getway'.

Which PC cannot access the Internet and web-based utility, the one with the ethernet or the one with the HPNA?

The one with the ethernet can not access the internet. Nor can the HPNA one. Hmm... Let me try running the network setup wizard.

Its probably the router. I'm not familiar with the Linksys but make sure the DNS is on and set to get an IP automatically. Disable any kind of PPPoe or any kind of DSL configuration.

Set the clients to obtain IP automatically, or make sure that your ip is in the range 192.168.1.x... that's probably what's causing you troubles.

This still will not work. Any thoughts?

Oddly, when the cable modem is connected directly to the computer's RJ45 port, and the phoneline adapter is connected to the router and the other HPNA port on the router is connected to the wall phone outlet, I can see the other computer on the network. Please help, this is confusing me.

I had the same problem and this is what solved it for me...your mileage may vary.

First, get the MAC address for your NIC using Start->Run->winipcfg and plug this into the MAC addy spot under the "advanced" menu of the 198.162.1.1 interface.

Make note of your DNS IP's while you're in winipcfg and write them down.

Unplug the router, then the modem....wait 20sec and then plug them back in in the reverse order...allow the modem to sync up before you plug the router back in.

Go into your Network properties panel, and plug these DNSs in under the DNS tab (you'll have to enable DNS, and specify the host and domain as well...these can be found under the "identification" tab as computer name and workgroup respectively.

Hope this helps.

What's so different about the 2wire unit that makes it so much better than the Linksys router? Besides, I got the router and a NIC from Staples the other day for a total of $60 after MIR and coupon.
