linksys router as a repeater

I need to link two computers that are 400 ft apart in a pretty dirty environment. we are going to use STP for the wiring. Can I put a second router half way in between to break up the distance? Will I get a good signal traveling that far without anything in between? This will be installed in a graphite processing plant and it is dirty and and the graphite is electrically conductive, FYI.

thanks,

Darron

I'd be hesitant to place a router in that kind of an enviroment. They heat up, and you'd need to keep it shielded/covered up to keep out as much graphite dust as possible. If you haven't purchased anything yet, I'd recommend fiber for that particular run. It's more expensive, but can go the distance easy. We use Transitions 100BaseT to 100BaseFX converters for those kind of situations where I used to work.

You can but I would just pick up a small 4 port switch for something like this unless you have a spare router sitting there you want to use.

we do have a small room that is kept free of the dust about half way between the main router an dthe office i am need to connect to. we do have an extra router lying around so we only have to but the wire.

thanks for the advice i will investigate the fiber first and see what it is going to cost but i have a feeling management is going to want to do this the cheapest that they can.
