linksys router and netgear 16port switch

we have internet yet we port forwarded the router and now the switch wont let us connect to any servers, we have the internet just we cant connect to any game servers

1. unless the switch specifiically states that it is managed, there should be no issues whatsoever with it's use. Therfore, it is surely a problem with your router.

Unfortunately the details that you gave me aren't very detailed at all so I will have to guess what it is that you are talkign about.

Assuming that you are just playing internet games, you should not have to open any ports.
Assuming that you are running a game server behind the router on your local netowrk, you need to make sure that the port fowarding settigns are pointing to the correct IP settigns of the local game server🙂

modem-switch-router and the comps are on the switch

i was reading also that we may need a cross over between switch or some usage of a cross over
i have not a clue

No, the switch has to be behind the router. Switches can only relay information to computers on the same network.

Routers allow packets to raverse different networks.

In this case you will

a) plug in your router to you modem using the WAN port and make sure you internet connection is working fine. setup what you need to with a client pc hooked up.

b) assuming that it is a router with 4 or so built in ports, understand that that means that it has a built in switch. you can daisy chain switches and not have a problem.

c) you will now conenct one of the switch ports from your 16 port to a switch port on the router. if your 16 port switch is new it won't matter what port you use, if it is an older one, it will have a jack labled 'uplink' which you should use.

Then, any computer that you plug in directly to the 16 port switch or into the router should
a)have internet access
b)be able to talk to another pcs on your local network.

yah but like we want a wan address so we need to like port forward?
cause i told my friend the router needs to seperate the two networks
but he was saying that there is a way to directly have just the switch
but i think it might just be specific kind or some bad ass cisco one

but we want to run a internet server on it
of course we dont have a static ip but we should be able
with the router to host games and bs on it using a wan address right?

You really should read up on basic home networks before you go and screw up your parents ISP.

Goosemaster laid out the basic setup. Yes you will then have to forward ports to a internet server behind the router. To be more specific, you will have to provide more details on your equipment, and type of ISP. It would also be more helpful if your questions were not all in a single sentence. There is litterly hundreds of web pages walking you through a simple network like this. Just spend a few minutes with google and read a few. Hopefully within an hour, you will have the network you are trying to acheive.

i got it set up and working i just had a few questions
i will admit i am a bit of a noob but just thought
if someone could give me a better clue of whats
