Linksys networking help needed.

Ok I am a complete tool when it comes to networking but I am trying to get a Linksys 4 port cable router to work with my new XP machine and my old 98 machine.
I have set it up and have managed to get the net access to work on both but I can't get any file access or anything else going to each other.
I have set both up with the same network names and enabled file sharing on the 98 machine.
I have followed the helps on the Linksys site but still no luck.
I also noticed that they say there XP drivers will be available soon , maybe thats the prob.
Anyone else out there have this set up working?

Help

My guess is that a lot of network newbies are going to have this problem. Especially with XP appearing more and more. XP uses security more like win2000 and NT. This makes it hard to get it to talk to the insecure win98. I haven't worked with winXP, but I have worked quite a bit with NT and 2000. Usually I have to create an account on the win200 machine and use that same login and password on the win98 machine. Then I can map drives as that user.

People are way to used to insecure drive sharing. I had a friend that used a windows share finding program to sniff out shares at the university. He found hundreds of wide open shares. Pretty scarey if you think about it.

That said you are behind a router with a firewall, so you are relatively safe.

"Usually I have to create an account on the win200 machine"

Usually? Try every single time. The only alternative is enabling the guest account.

Thanks for the reply.
Am on the night shift so I will try it agian on Monday. I have learned that stubborn comp problems should never be tried after a night shift!
Will post my success or lack of then.
Thanks again

Darren

To get Windows 98 or Millennium to talk to XP install NetbeuI protocol on the two systems:
Support for this protocol in Microsoft Windows XP has been discontinued ,SO to install it (in XP)

Install NetBEUI on Windows XP --- files are in Windows XP CD Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder. The files necessary for installing the NetBEUI protocol on Windows XP
are Netnbf.inf and Nbf.sys. Complete the following steps to install NetBEUI:

---1--- Copy Nbf.sys to the C:\windows\System32\Drivers directory. (has to be there)

---2--- Copy Netnbf.inf to the C:\windows\Inf hidden directory.

---3--- Click Start, goto setting , Network Connections ,click Locate Area Connection.

---4--- Click on Properties , on Locate Area Connection , click install ,Click Protocol,

---5--- Click Add ,Click to select NetBEUI Protocol from the list and then click OK.

Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the installation. The NetBEUI protocol should now be installed and working.
