Linksys network adapter installation problem!

I just got a Linksys WRT54G Router with a WMP54GS adapter. When I try to install the adapter on my older PC with Win98, I have some problems. It worked at first, the device name appeared correctly in device manager. Then I removed my older card from the list and now my wireless adapter is detected as "PCI network controller". I tried to run the setup again with no luck. I tried the "reinstall driver" thing but my INF doesn't seem to work with that... I'm getting desperate, I tried a lot of stuff! Updated with Intel chipset utility, reset drvdata.bin, drvidx.bin.... I changed slot, reinstalled "client for microsoft network", Dial-up adapter, TCP/IP... I went in safe mode to try all this stuff with no result. On top of that, I can't find my Win98 CD so I can't format!! Any ideas? Don't tell me to put XP because this PC wouldn't take it too well (400celeron 96MB ram lol) it's only for typing and sending stuff anyway... There as to be some Win98 expert still around 🙁
 
hi, your win 98 cd *should* also be in C:\windows\options\cabs if you see cab files and setup.exe you can figure the rest out im sure. i think you tried this though but anway...try installing the driver by selecting that "PCI network controller" in device manager manually, then specifing the driver location to the correct location on the cd.
 
My cabs directory has only 3MB of stuff in it so this is no use. Yeah, tried to install the drivers manually but nothing shows on the list when I specify the correct INF file on the CD (with the "have disk" button")... Maybe it's something in the registry?
 
hmm.. thats a strange problem, i'd reinstall windows, for a cd get one from a friend that is win98se or a relative. If you can come across any computer with the files the the cabs directory, burn it to a cd and use that with your product key. I'm sorry i can't think of anything quick. You can goto linksys' website and download drivers for it to install it. Another option, hopefully free otherwise don't bother, is to call linksys' tech support. I do not think its i the "registry" i think its simple configuration issues that are causing the problem. Go into your network settings properties and delete everything in it then reinstall each from scratch as a last resort, actually. don't do that. you STILL need the cd to put the tcpip,etc installed again.. so all i can think of is do anything to get a cd from anyone. even windows Millionsa Errorz for that slower pc would work for the simple typing/sending stuff if you have to reinstall.
