according to linksysifo.org, the answer is no.

One good thing is that the standard firmware has static ip DHCP (something the wrt54G/GS does not), which is one of the many reasons to get the 3rd firmware. SO for some, the base firmware may be enough. If it is as reliable than wrt54g v4 then it may be a decent router for those not looking to hack.

the wrt54g with 3rd party firmware is a lot better, in terms of more functionality.

i have a wrt54g ver. 3.1, and well am using stock fimrware 4.20.7 (seriously before 4.20.6 this router sucked for a lot of things , such as torrents)

anyway, i dont really care toomuch about the wrt54g's linux abilities, but does anyone know if this is a better router based on range, signal strength, routing speed etc? or should i just stick with a wrt54g (i figure if i get this i can sell the wrt54g easily and recoup the cost)

From Amazon's product page:

Special Offer: Purchase this item offered by Amazon.com and get 5% off the price (for up to $100 in savings). Offer valid through February 13, 2006. Place this item in your shopping cart and use promotional code (see site for code, not sure if it's against the rules to post it here) in the box provided at checkout. (Applies only to products sold by Amazon.com. Does not apply to products sold on our site by third-party merchants or through third-party areas such as Amazon.com Marketplace, Auctions, or zShops.) See details.

So you could actually knock $2 off the price. Not much, but it's something.

The WRT54GL is the new version that has Linux/OpenSource firmware. I believe the WRT54G used to but has switched to non-linux firmware with the latest version.

I've never had any problems with Linksys routers, however I have the most experience with netgear b/c that's the one in my house. I've been looking to pick up the WRT54GL b/c some of the 3rd party features offer benifiets that I'm interested in

Well... dammit.
I just saw these new WRT54GL routers on the shelves with an OK price at Fry's ($50 sale price, iirc) -- and wondered if they were flashable with the sveasoft firmware.
I'll google in a minute, but can you link any info, meices?
I opted for an Airlink MIMO for $30 on sale ($55reg price, but mixed reviews +/-) -- mostly because I had given up on finding a flashable Linksys.

edit: Looks to be true. The WRT54GL is the new flashable version. Dangit. Now, I have to decide between driving alllll the way back to Fry's to swap the Airlink mimo for the linksys. MIMO -- distance. Linksys -- features. Arg.

I'd take the mimo back and get the proven winner. :p You can also increase the WRT54G?GS/GL's transmit power levels w/ 3rd party firmware.
