Linksys Broadband Router is unstable... Why?

We are using AT&T DSL with a Static IP. The Linksys router works fine most of the day but it appears to go down overnight. It works again when I unplug the router and plug it back in after 5-10sec.

What would most likely be the cause of this? Is it a setting on the router or could it be the power outlet its plugged into?

The only other thing I can think of is the phone outlet its plugged into. The phone outlet has ports for 2 phone lines.

The router is a Linksys WRT54G. I have installed quite a few of these in the past without incident.

The internet just appears to go down, the lights are still there. The internet will not go up unless I unplug the router and plug it back in.

This is most likely a dumb question but for proccess of elimination I will ask anyway, with that model router there are two types of reset one for default and one for factory have you tried both of them, remember if you attempt a factory reset it includes passwords and youwill have to start over from scratch

I havent reset it yet. It was brand new when I put the Static IP's in it a few days ago. Is there any reason I should reset the entire router?

Also I have no way of knowing if the reset will work permanently until the next day. So far the unplug power trick has only been temporary.

Point well taken, O.k then in my opinion the router itself might not be to blame, you say you have installed this model router several times before, thus your instalation has got to be correct that leaves software and power, do you have or are you familiar with a multi-meter? your wall outlet/power bar might be fine but the AC adapter I'm guessing 9-12vlts dc, these things will go without rhyme or reason, but moere important if they spike or drop the router will drop the connection, as a safty measure this would explain why it its on for a while then disconnects at night when iddle or unattended, they tend to get hot when left idle, Ive gotten brand new 9 volt power suplies that are putting out 13-14 volts, and have lost 3 hubs/switches to power problems, the other thing is to try and re-install the drivers for your connection, I have a second desktop that has a not so legit copy of windows that i mainly let my girlfriend scew around on, it will do the same thing to my D-link DSL 300G that happens to yours, same way to fix it to, butt plug my good computer in smooth sailing, after an hour on the other one unplug and plug back in both are the same model computer thw other one has a smaller hard drive and different OS, so its a software poroblem not a hardware one

Well I guess the next thing is to test the power by using a new power strip. I am thinking of also exchanging the router for another of the same model.

What version of the WRT54G? If it is the v5 or higher, REPLACE IT with a WRT54GL or another brand altogether. The WRT54G v5 or higher models are known to be crap.

Have you tried updating the firmware to the latest revision? That seems to be the easiest thing to check.
