I explained this to a newbie, so I thought there might be some people here interested in this:
Ok if you want to set up your Linksys Router so that you control the ports and allow people to download from you on Napster follow these steps:
1.)Type your Routers IP# in InternetExplorer, usually 192.168.1.1. Type the password.
2.)What we want to do now is go to the status screen, click the Status tab at the top of the page. Jot down the numbers listed there for DNS we'll need them later, DNS is at the bottom of the page.
3.)Now click the DHCP tab at the top of the screen. We're going to disable DHCP, but first its important you understand what DHCP is.
*Explanation*:
Ok picture this all your Internet data comes through the cable/dsl modem. This IP is forwared to your Router (usually IP 192.168.1.1), and the router sends the Internet data to all the PCs on the network. When DHCP server is enabled it grabs an IP number from the Router(192.168.1.X) and assigns it your PC arbitrarily. Meaning that your PC does not have a set IP number. The reason that it does not open ports in the Advanced>Forwading menu is that your PC does not have a unique IP address. That is what disabling DHCP Server is going to enable us to do. Assign a unique IP address so we can open the port Napster needs.
/*Explanation*
*note: be sure to have your Win98 disc avaiable before completing step 4*
4.) Ok now you understand DHCP click the circle for Disable next to DHCP Server.
5.) Ok our Linksys Router by default is at 192.168.1.1 (unless u changed the IP). Look at the Starting IP Address blank it should read 192.168.1.X. Since our Linksys Router is at 192.168.1.1, it would be good to start our IP addresses at 2. So the Starting IP Address line should read 192.168.1.2.
6.) Below is a blank for Number of DHCP Users this is asking for the number of computers we expect to be on the network. If you enter 20 for example that will make 20 IP addresses available to your network. I entered 20.
7.) Click apply at the bottom of the page.
8.) Ok now we have disabled DHCP which automatically assigns IPs to computers on the Router. Now we will assign individual IP information to each PC on the network.
9.) From Windows click: Start> Settings> Control Panel > Network > TCP/IP(the one listed for your Network Card).
10.) On the IP address address tab it should be on Obtain IP address automatically(DHCP would assign an arbitrary IP address automatically). Now we want to click specify an IP address so we can assign our PC its own IP address.
Click on that circle. Since this is the first machine we're assigning its IP address we would assign it this: 192.168.1.2. *for the second PC we assigned it would be 192.168.1.3 and so on.
11.) Now below for subnet mask enter: 255.255.255.0.
12.) Click the Gateway tab.
13.)In the New Gateway box ,we're going to enter the IP address of our Router since it acts as the Gateway on our network. So we'll enter 192.168.1.1.
14.)Click add
*Note if there are extra unused Gateway numbers in the box Remove them at this time*
15.) Now click the DNS configuration tab. Remember in step 2 when we jotted down the DNS information. Well we're going to use it now. Click the Enable DNS circle.
16.) In the host blank, type in the name of your cable ISP.
17.)In the DNS Search Server Order Blank, enter the first set of numbers you jotted down in and click Add, then do the same for the second.(I only had 2 if you had more or less that will be fine).
18.) Ok we're all set! Click Ok. Windows may prompt you to insert the Windows 98 disc at this time, if so do so.
19.) Windows will now prompt you to restart your PC do so .
20.) Your PC is now set up with its individual IP account!
*Repeat steps 9-20 for each PC on your Network!!!!*
21.] Ok now that all our PC's are setup with their IP numbers we're ready to open ports so Napster can download.
*Explanation: Ports are openings into which we can allow other PCs to access data on our PCs. Since our Router acts as a firewall, it blocks programs like Napster(Napster tries to connect with our PC at port 6699) from allowing people to download. This is not what we want, lets fix this.*
22.)Type your Routers IP# in InternetExplorer, usually 192.168.1.1. Type the password.
23.)Click the Advanced Tab
24.) The forwarding tab is the place where we can open ports, so programs like Napster can enable people to download from us. Click the forwarding tab now.
25.) Say the first PC you assigned an IP address is the one you want to open a port on. That would be IP#:192.168.1.2. So in the first IP Address blank enter 192.168.1.2.
*Note check the IP address of the machine you want to open a port on, that is the number you'll enter in the IP Address blank*
26.) Since we want to open up the port Napster uses(6699) thats the number we're going to enter. If you wanted to open a different port you'd enter that number instead.
*Note: you can find the port in the File>Preferences menu of Napster*
27.)In the blank that lines up to the left of the IP Address blank enter 6699 for Service Port
28.) Click apply
29.) Exit the Linksys setup program, then Restart your PC. Then enter 192.168.1.1 and make sure all the settings stuck and are correct.
*Repeat steps 25-29 for each machine you want to open the port Napster uses*
Congratulations the port Napster uses is now open and people can Download from you now!!
