Linksys 802.11g Wifi Router $37.24 AR/AC w/free ship

Thanks! I just ordered one and ran into another great deal. While I was checking out, I got a notice saying that I get to sign up for a 4 month free trial of Amazon Prime. This came just in time for Christmas shopping. I ordered the router with 1-day shipping for only $4 more... 2-day shipping was free but the router wouldn't arrive until next Monday. 🙂

Just got my router. It's a v5 so I'm not sure if it's compatible with all the free software out there. I guess I'll have to do some research.

Almost all are v5's from mail order, bad deal, they are NOT hackable and unproven in terms of quality of the software the use.

A WRT54GL is supposed to come out that is hackable older one you can order.

The V4 units are hackable, but they are very tempermental. You can't flash them initially with a firmware that is larger than 3 Mb and sometimes they get messed up and/or stuck and end up bricks.
Anyway, the best thing to do with a V4 is to first go to www.dd-wrt.org and download one of the v23 beta firmwares, try the latest which right now is from 11/04/05. (Since they are not located in the US they use 04-11-05 for the date.) Anyway, they have a mini, std, and voip sizes. You need to flash the mini first, since it's under 3 MB. After that you can put the std one on. Oh, and make sure to use the Generic .bin files, not the one for the G. I know it sounds strange, but trust me.
Or if you don't like dd-wrt you could use some firmware from Tofu or Thibor. Tofu is for the WRT54G and Thibor's builds are for the GS.
The V4 G is pretty cool though, the hardware is the same as the V4 GS so you can put Thibor's GS firmware on it and it will be a GS with speedbooster. (Of course, you can get that from dd-wrt too. It's a checkbox you turn on in the GUI.)
This is because Linksys has cheapened the GS as well as the G now and the V4 GS and the V4 G are the same, 4 MB of flash memory, and 16 MB of other memory. The older GS had 8/16.

Get even more info from www. linksysinfo.com and www.dd-wrt.com

Just stay away from the V5 G which is 2/8. Nobody can do anything with them yet and probably never will.

Thanks! I use dd-wrt on a few of the routers, and have good luck with it. I might snag a couple of the v4s, since the hackable units are going away fast.

Hmm...maybe my post was confusing a bit...let me try this again. If you have a V4 you have to follow these steps:

1. go to dd-wrt and download one of the V23 beta2 firmwares. Get the mini from 04.11.05 and use this file to flash: dd-wrt.v23_mini_generic.bin
The V4 doesn't work well with the .bin file for the WRT54G, you should use the generic.
2a. If you like dd-wrt you can move up to the std firmware now. It has more features.
2b. If you don't like dd-wrt and want something that has extra features, but not so many and you want a GUI that looks more like the Linksys stock one then flash to Tofu's latest HyperWRT firmware which is for the G. Or you can use Thibor's HyperWRT which is for the GS with speedbooster. The reason you can pick on this one is that the V4 G and the V4 GS have the same hardware.

If you switch to HyperWRT you should clear the nvram before setting up the router. See the linksysinfo forums for more details.

Not too confusing at all🙂 Hard to get v3 or lower, and you stated that a couple of flashes with specific DD-WRT images will get you there with v4.

I guess my V2.2 which is running the alchemy firmware may become a collectors item. I might be able to sell it on egay for big $$$$$

Circuit City and Best Buy both have this router on sale this week for $39.99 after rebate.
In Austin, the 183 Circuit City had only V5 units. The 183 Best Buy had a mixture of V4 and V5.
Grabbed me a V4 at lunch time today.

Serial number is on box.

1st 4 digits = CDFA = WRT54G v4.0
1st 4 digits = CDFB = WRT54G v5.0

you guys seems to know a bit about routers, question for you guys. What are the advantages of hacking your linksys router? I know what it means to hack, but I dont understand what are the advantages. You get like better speed, range or what?

I"m new to router hacking, but savvy in sat hacking.

There are several advantages. There are several versions of firmware. Many add features that are only available in $1000 routers. Increasing power output, adding IPtables, bandwidth shaping, etc. There are many many different features that can be added depending on what you are looking for.

By the way getting anything other than a V5 router online will be a crapshoot. Not that V5 is bad just not hackable with the current firmware. If you are not into hacking/customizing and just want a 802.11g router then this is a great deal regardless of what version you end up with.
