I keep getting disconnected when using a router.... but when my compter is hooked up directly without the router, it works fine. I lose connection after abour few hours....

It is a STATIC IP for sure cuz i called them... i setup everything right...
In the router setting page
1) KEEP ALIVE : REDIAL PERIOD (for how many seconds though???) is checked instead of CONNECT ON DEMAND

I have DIRECTV DSL in SF area... thanks

You're lucky.
I have same configuration.
1. Upgrade your firmware on Linksys.
2. Check keep alive on the very first page of its setup.
should work, worked for me
PPPoE RAS Disable
User Name:
Password:
RAS Plan: 512k Ethernet
Connect on Demand: Max Idle Time Min.
Keep Alive: Redial Period 20 Sec.

I did all that.. it worked fine for few hours.. and then.. DEAD again... so reset my router.... i know i have a static IP, but the inter worked even without puting all the values in.... I know taht i have static because i called DirecTVDSL and asked them.... i dont know what it is.. damn i hate DSL.. i miss AT&T cable....

clicked on Obtain an IP Address Automatically right now.. but soon i will lose connection again... in few hours... then i have to power off dsl and router to get it to work... hopeless...

Call tech support ( I know, long wait time, hate it) and make it their trouble !!!
Ask to create a ticket, escalate to higher level.!!!
And use static IP.
Honestly, I don't have trouble with the same config.
by the way my speed: 768 down, 120 up

For what it's worth, I have the same configuration at work, with Telocity. With the Static IP, you do not need the keep alive feature. It's just a guess, but, maybe that's actually throwing things off. We got ours installed and running without a hitch, and are enjoying 1.2Mbps from Telocity.

I have this exact same problem with the linksys router. Except my DSL providers uses PPPoE. The connection will work great for a few hours, and then all of the sudden I get a series of connection drops, gets to the point where I have to unplug the router and restart it to make it work again for a couple more hours. I've been messing around with settings for the last week and also upgraded the firmware, nothing is fixing it. I gave up, will be returning this POS tomorrow and going back to my dual NIC setup until I can find a decent router that actually works.

I have firmware 1.38.4, and I haven't had to reboot it in ages. The telocity modem seems to need a reboot every 3 or 4 days, but it's not the router's fault.

Don't use DHCP; setup your static IP. Copy down the exact info you get when you're connected via DHCP, then fill it in as your static info. It should work great.

BTW, I used to use BellSouth (PPPoE), and I had a lot of problems with the "dialing in" cr4p. I'm not too sure that linksys has fixed the bugs in that, but I can tell you that it is rock solid with static IP.
