I love my linksys. Works great with Linux and Windows. It cost less than $50 (Canadian, so we're talking less than $30) from a big retail chain store...Linksys LNE100TX 10baseT/100baseTX for cheap :)
the 3com's were like $100...
Besides, Linksys is Anandtech standard.
High end buyers guide, Value buyers guide, and a review system setup. All linksys :) If it's good enough for the AT boys, it's good enough for me ;) (I linked to the gaming systems in the buyers guide becuase those are my guidlines, but you can look at the others if you like, Linksys or a built in NIC is in them all)

The 3Com's are the highest quality though...and other than the stupid systray icon they create (linksys doens't :p) they are excellent cards, just pricey...

Used/system pulled 3Com and Intel cards go for around $20 -$25 on the boards.

I have pulled 3Com 3C905-TX cards for sale: $20 + shipping each. :)

Other members have about the same deal. That is not much more than a used, different brand card.

I however use a PCI SMC EtherPower II 10/100 on my main PC. It works well and is VERY small in size, like 1/2 of some other cards, even smaller than the already small 3COM & Intel PRO/100+ Management. Wish I could get more of those.

Networking at Michigan State University.... Hmmm, no matter you are having problems with ethernet. The highly intelligent MSU students probably dip their NIC's in beer and then go riot and flip some cars!!!
