Linksys® WRT54G Wireless-G Router for $9.99 or $24.99 YMMV...

I'm a cheapo b@$tard...have been using a wireless b router for the longest time. Got a good deal this afternoon for a g model so I've finally upgraded.🙂

If you got Fry's in your area then you can PM OD (Linksys router...B&M price is $60) for the advertised price of $39.99 at today's LA Times ad.... good till Tuesday, Dec 6.

OD has 2 rebates for $15 each for a total of $30 making your router $9.99.

Rebate 1...good fm 11/20 to 1/14/06

Rebate 2......good till tomorrow only 12/3/05.

There are stores that are excluded fm this rebate...check the form...most are in TX and GA...don't know the reason why?

If your store is excluded then your router will be $24.99...sorry!

Above rebate links are for reference only...MIRs will print after paying your item.

If you got no OD in your area...you can PM it to Staples...linksys router.
They also have a $15 rebate making it also $24.99.

Got advantage card...then use it so it adds up for your reward credit.🙂

GL on this deal...the OD manager was kind of p!$$ off when I got this deal but too embarrassed to show it to me...he forgot abt the rebates when he did the PM so I say...YMMV

LMK who got on this deal...

Thanks to gpgofast for this info:

You can verify version number without opening the package. Check the serial number printed on the box and compare it to linkysinfo.org's list.

Check this link for serial number/version numbers.

Avoid the version 5 if you can and get an older one, there are lists of serial numbers on the net.

You're right...lots of report abt ver 5 having speed issues. I'll check my router tomorrow...left it in my car's trunk.

For those who want less hassle, you can get the WRT54G for $44.99 shipped from Staples.com and there's like $15 MIR. You have to use a $10 off code, available from your fav deals site or google (how I found it).

Mine arrives tuesday for $48 shipped with $15 MIR.

Dang....v5 is incompatible with third-party firmware....that sucks. If I get one I'll just go find a retail store that has v4 and exchange it; hehe

v4 is incompatible also. Had one at work and tried to flash it which killed it.
...yikes! Some peeps report that they have good results with v 4...I hope, I'm lucky with what I got or less I'll be stuck with the linksys b model which have been problem free for me.

I just installed a linksys pci wireless g card in my other comp and it was very slow. I thought it was because of it's location (blind spots)..then maybe, it has the same problem as the g router.

I flashed my V4 with the DD-WRT firmware just fine. You just have to use the "mini" file. Their are reports that after you flash to the "mini" you can flash to the standard version. I am not sure what is the difference betweeen the files b/c the interface in both versions sure looks the same to me

v5 is full of problems both by itself and cant work with 3rd party add ons. The reason is that linksys started using this software called vxworks in v5 which is an entirely new software. So instead of the fairly solid firmware (based on linux) they've been tweaking for years in v4, they have a entirely new one. The new vxworks also is much smaller which is why the v5 has very small memory on board. And the small memory means no 3rd party firmware.

v4 is mostly ok for stuff, haven't heard too many problems with it.

Just a heads up for you all thinking about buying a new WRT54G and for everyone else: Here's an interesting article about the recent hardware revisions of the WRT54G.

Yeah, they are going to sell a wrt54gl for about $70ish which is basically the old version v4. Quite a lot to pay if you can get it for $10 AR as in this thread 🙂

can these be put into a system (with an existing Linksys wireless router) as an access point REPEATER can't they? and still use WPA?

v4 still works. Just read the firmware installation procedures before doing it.

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=31 this lists all the firmware and what works.

Got a v5 so I have to search fm other ODs and exchange mine with the older version 4...lucky for me I got around 5 ODs in my general area.🙂

I got mixed brand wireless cards with my other comps so definitely mine won't work with them.

Damn...Fry's and Staples didn't have v4 models and OD didn't have any of them at all on the shelf.

Neither did another Staples and Office Depot. Went to Best Buy as well (they also have a $30 rebate) and no one is carrying the older versions of this model.

I dont recall about if the stock firmware has this, but I know that 3rd party firmware you can use them like that. I dont know specifically about WPA, but I would think so.

Damn! I hope my ODs carry the older version or else I'm gonna be stuck tinkering with the v5.

I also went to Best Buy who had a crap load of them and they didn't have any either. They have it for $39.99 after rebates, too.
