Linking ZIP files

If I download a set of RAR files and start extract on the first file the rar software automatically unpacks all of the files. If I download a set of ZIP files how do I get WinZIP to do the same thing? As it is I have to manually unzip each file which is tedious if there are a lot of files, and several times I have managed to miss one and then had to hunt and peck to see if the missing file 07 was compressed file h or k. PITA

have you tried 7-zip? not sure if it does it via the explorer shell (GUI), but it should have no problem in the command shell by using

7z.exe -e *.zip

that will unzip all files in the directory with a zip extension. you could also use 7z -e abc*.zip to only unzip files that start with abc.

Thanks for the reply. No I haven't used 7zip. I have always used WinZIP and grumbled every time I had to unzip a whole bunch of files. Will give 7zip a try.

Alternately, you can put all the split Zip files in one folder in Explorer, click Edit>select all, click File> extract here (from the WinZip context menu).

That;s what I do when I the files are rar, Select all in Edit and then I have the option to extract here. I can select all when they are zipped and do not have the extract here option. I have downloaded 7zip and am going to try it now.

Thanks a million. I had a folder with 33 zipped files. 7zip zipped (pun intended) right through it. WinZIP will go in the archive.

LOL...Lifted is 100% correct, and I agree, 7Zip is da bomb! I was going to suggest you get WinRAR then read you already use it. What's strange is, before I posted my first reply (just to be sure), I have a RAR file that has 18 split Zip files in it which I extracted to a single folder and used the "extract here" selection from WinRAR's context menu. Extracted all the split zips just fine. In WinRAR's Options>Settings>Integration, do you have Zip files selected?

I've used WinRAR for years, it's great, but I really like 7Zip for it's ability(from the right-click context menu) to open *.exe files that WinRAR can't open.

WinRAR isn't free, it's shareware. You either need to pay or sign up for an affiliate promo to use indefinitely.

There's a difference between freeware and free software. Freeware is given gratis, but it's restricted in how you can use it. Free software is free for you to do as you see fit. You can even sell free software.

WinRAR as noted is shareware, and while it'll continue to work after the trial period, it's kind of uncool to do. Also, the RAR format isn't a free format. That could bite you in the ass some time in the future. With free software, and free compression formats, your data will always be secure. You won't be at the mercy of a company that doesn't care about your data.

Pretty sure if Eugene decides to drop RAR support he'll release the source code. Good points ^ but I don't share paranoia ;-p

That statement has no basis in fact, or precedent. You could just as easily say he'll give everyone a carton of cigarettes, and $10,000. Freeware isn't free. A free program like 7Zip has source code available NOW, and it'll always be free. You're free to modify it, sell it, give it away, or anything else you like.

Aside from that, if you use WinRAR past the trial period, you're violating the license. An update tomorrow could make it stop working, and you have no recourse to fix it.

You have a point but... I don't see any complication to it.

There is unrar that is freeware, source code available. No, you can't re-use it and make your own software but that's not the point.

Point is...

1) RAR is not going anywhere.
2) You will be able to access your archived data, no matter what happens in the future.

and most importantly, nobody forces you to use RAR and its derivatives. There is choice.
