The steps I used to solve:

2R2+R3
3/8R1-R2
R3+R2
7R2+R3
(4/485)R3
-(59/4)R3+R2
-8R2+R1
-2R3+R1
(-1/8)R1
Reorder Rows.

8 -8 2 108
-5 -3 4 -6
3 6 10 -59

1.multiplying the 2nd row 8 and the 1st row by 5 and adding the two
2. multiplying the 3rd row by 8 and the 1st row by 3 and adding the two
we get...
8 -8 2 108
0 -64 42 492
0 72 74 -796

1. Dividing the 2nd row by -8 and the 1st row by 1 and adding the two
2. Multiplying the 2nd row by 9/8 and adding it to the third row
we get...
8 0 -3.25 46.5
0 -64 42 492
0 0 485/4 -485/2

1. Multiplying the 3rd row by 13/485 and adding it to the 1st row
2. Multiplying the third row by -168/485 and adding it to the 2nd row
we get...

8 0 0 40
0 -64 0 576
0 0 485/4 -485/2
Divide and you will have the correct answer.
Keep in mind that the last column is the augmented numbers.

With this thread and your other one from Calc 1205/1206, you are giving me painful and fond memories of an Engineering freshman at VT. I used to spend about 6 hours every Wednesday in the Math Emporium (is that still around?) on this class.

Hope you're enjoying EF 1105, too!

Does anyone ever actually use matricies to solve simultaneous equations? Its so much extra work...

Augment the matrix, perform elementary row operations, get it into reduced echelon form. TADA!

Wow you guys are absolutely incredible. I can't thank all of you enough for all the help.

Turns out that was on of the more complex ones that ill have to solve (At least for a while). It would be easier if we were allowed more than a standard 4-Function calculator.

On the normal ones though i can normally get those done in VERY short order.

After 3 hours of studying it paid off. There are only 4 questions on these stupid tests and I got unlucky (Due to lack of memorization on one part) and got a 3/4. Luckily out of like 25 of these quizzes she drops the 5 lowest. This quiz was more focused on Reduced Echelon Form, and Trivial/Non Trivial solutions. It was really actually very easy, i would have gotten a 100 if i would have taken the extra 5 mins to go over that one trick question :(

Yes the Math Emporium is still at VT. It is off campus so i have to either take the bus or get a ride from someone. My friend has her car there and most of the time she will take me there and back because like me she is going into engineering and we are there at least 2x a week.

(Lol her and our other friend really had a good laugh when i tried to walk it my first time. I took a wrong turn or didn't turn i should say and wound up way way out of the way. If i looked right the VT Golf Course was way off in the distance...oops; but they held up and waited for me that time)

As for how hard the courses are, they aren't that hard, i have found that more or less i just need to gain more discipline. The burden is on me to do everything outside of class; so far i haven't done bad, but not nearly as well as i would like. I still have a long time this semester to pull everything up to A- B+ area so ill have to put in the extra time.

Thanks a lot again for helping me so much on this problem guys. I honestly cannot thank you enough!!

From Calc 1-4, Linear Algebra, Diffy Q, we couldn't use any calculator.

extra work??? Type the coefficients into one matrix
Type the constants into a second matrix
Hit 4 or 5 keys, and the answer pops out.

Work?!?!? If you have a simpler way to solve 4 equations with 4 unknowns or 5 equations with 5 unknowns, I'd love to know about it. (Of course, I agree that Gaussian or Gauss-Jordan elimination is more work than it's worth)

Heck, I had to take a state licensing exam a couple weeks ago; a test which is incredibly difficult to finish on time unless you really KNOW your math. I had to find the area of a triangle given 3 points on a plane (no vertical or horizontal sides). I used the determinant of a matrix to solve that problem in less than 15 seconds. Try: The points (1,4), (3,10), (9,6) form a triangle. Find the area. 15 second problem with matrices.
(and actually, you never even write down the matrix; just do the calculations that are based on the matrix.)

From Calc 1-4, Linear Algebra, Diffy Q, we couldn't use any calculator.

I had a ti-83+ o it was basically useless from calc 1...barely used it except for arithmetic....

like factoring in diff. eqtns :D
