With the upcoming "Goddess of Destruction" expansion, Lineage II has officially announced they will be going Free to Play.

Or more accurately... Lineage II will be going "Pay to Win".

Q: What does "truly free" mean?
A: Goddess of Destruction gives you truly free access to the largest Lineage II content update ever. You will receive free booster packs at key milestones in the game that supplement your game progression. You can also accelerate and enhance gameplay with items or premium packs from the L2 Store. "Truly free" means you can enjoy Lineage II in a way that suits your play style and budget.

Other than that, looks like L2 will be completely free to play; all content, all classes, no restrictions.

I played it for a bit when it first came out years ago. I liked it, though I have no idea how much it has changed so my comments are probably inaccurate now. It is/was a grindfest, tons of gold farmers, not for the weak. It was fun though to me and had some really interesting areas and stuff. They just made you really work your ass off for everything and didn't hand you shit, which I did like too.

I used to play it when it first came out too, it was a major grindfest back then and I'm not sure if it's changed or not. I'm surprised it took this long to go F2P, has it been doing well all these years?

Yea, played at release, major grind but it was actually kind of fun on a private server with increased rates. I always thought the game had a really good look to it at least, but it felt pretty shallow playing it.

I played it for a couple of years back when it came out. It was hell of a grind like KaOTiK says. I remember staying in the same room with a group for hours and hours killing the same mobs over and over trying to level up. Once I got my Treasure Hunter up I would go solo crap while partied to help power level them. While doing this there was always gold farmers doing the same thing close by so I'd run up and ask to be buffed then continue to farm.

During the first it was great because you could pull a huge group of mobs then fake death next to some botters and wipe them completely out. It was hilarious.

I also loved having one of the highest Human Hawkeye's on the realm and having battles with farmers. Hawkeye archers hit like a truck when I stopped playing.

I played it when it first came out, and if you are used to things like Everquest or WoW, it is a totally different beast.

Grind is the name of the game in Lineage 2 - think days of grinding the same mob to get enough gold to buy pants. Think days of grinding to get things to summon a fighting Unircorn that last 3 minutes. Think weeks of grinding to get a set of armor, only to have the entire server after you for attacking someone... and then you actually drop equipped gear other players can ninja.

Hated it overall, but the big PVP battles were kind of cool.

I played the beta before WOW came out. I had worked my ass off to get up some not completely crap armor. Went out, ended up pulling one mob too many, and died. But wait, in their awesome wisdom they made it so armor is not only damaged but it can ****ing fall off your dead body. Well my chest plate "popped off" and I watch as some guy 10 levels lower than me walked by and picked it up. Never logged back in, never will.

Never thought of it as that good of a game. Only ever played the beta of it and paying to win ensures I won't ever play more.

I played this for quite a few years. Easily, the most love/hate MMORPG I ever played. It is a massive grind in the beginning, they have made it exceptionally easier now for noobs. The grind to max level is still pretty daunting. Not a game for the weak hearted, definitely not a CASUAL mmo.

The best part of this game is playing with a clan of 30 or more people, massive pvps, castle sieges, pvping for raid bosses. The pvp system in this game is totally unlike any other games, it's both challenging and satisfying. Nothing beats fighting 200+ players on the siege field. There are clans, and alliances which are several clans grouped together. It acts as a fraction of power fighting for control of the server. The entire game at higher levels becomes a epic power struggle for dominance, and bragging rights over you enemy. Sort of like a Game of Thrones.

Stylistically, the graphics are beautiful and very-- Korean. It can be extremely cutesy at times, but the rest of the world is very well constructed and eye pleasing. Textures are rich, all the areas are well rendered. Opposite of the blocky fantasy mess that is WoW. That's one of it's strengths is that it looks better than WoW by far.

I would say this game is like the Demon's Soul/Dark Soul of MMORPGs. Extremely unforgiving, encourages ganking/pking, time consuming but immensely rewarding once you stick with it and make it at higher levels, with gear and a good clan. There isn't really a story, not one that makes sense anyways and the graphics in the world of Lineage 2 is very beautiful.

I had my best moments in gaming history single-handily seizing a important strategic castle (Goddard) with a 9 man party versus several 4 or 5 different alliances, or when our Alliance we defeated two alliances, spawn into a raid and killed off another alliance, and stole their raid boss (Antharas).

Damn, after reading this I'm tempted to give it a try. But I gave up on MMOs after WotLK. Requires far too much time for too little reward compared to SP games.

Eh? :p

I have been playing off and on since beta.

The first couple years were horrific grindfest and leveling sucked balls.

The PAST couple of years they have made it much easier to level. The end game levels are now increased and but will be a bit of a grind. Previous chapters of L2 made it difficult to acquire really decent gear, but the latest update has made this an easier job.

The PVP is open, but there are drawbacks to PK'ing more so than what there was before. Cannot kill in safe zones (towns or other designated areas, like a raid instance).

The clan war system allows for PVP with no drawbacks (except for MINOR xp loss) to PVP'ing with a war-tag (clan you are at war with).

With the latest release and going FTP, they have had to add 3 new servers to keep up with the newest influx and folks that are returning.

If any of you play message me via in game mail (character name is Badco) and I will try to help ya out the best I can. I am on the chronos server. I do recommend that you join one of the newest servers in order to have a level playing field. There are no high level characters yet on the newest servers and no transfers to them are possible yet.
Those servers are; Shilen, Magmeld and Bartz

I played this game back when it came out. They'll have to pay me to play that game again.

So heavy on farming/grinding I'd rather be spending my time doing a data entry job

This one time I wanted to play an FPS, so I installed and played some quake 3 arena. I wandered all over the level, died several times, but eventually found my way to the rocket launcher spawn and it was up. I grabbed the rocket launcher and got a great kill with it right away, but a few seconds later someone came along behind me and killed me. Turns out, in their awesome wisdom, id made it so weapons not only use ammo but can also be picked up off the ground after you die and drop them. Well my rocket launcher "dropped" and I watch as some newbie walks up and picks it up. Never logged back in, never will.
