The install is pretty cut and dry and easy for anyone to join up once they get the correct files.

First you are going to need to download the following programs ahead of time to make thing easier.

WinZip 10.0 Free version "once installed download the Fileplanet Client for the game"

-------------------------------------------
Download Game Client
Lineage II Chronicle 5: Oath of Blood Client

Download Windows Host File
BTT Host File

-------------------------------------------
Install for Windows XP
Once you Download the L2 Client from Fileplanet, make sure to unpack it to a new folder on your desktop and than Install from the "setup.exe" file. Make sure you are installing a fresh copy, so uninstall the C4 client if you already have it."also make sure the Lineage II folder is no longer in your Program Files directory....

Once that is installed click on update or start and let the game update with the newest patches. Once that is done head into your Program Files folder where you installed the game typically located here "C:\Program Files\Lineage II"

Now head to the system folder "C:\Program Files\Lineage II\system" and find the file named "L2" right click it and select Create a Shortcut and than drag that new shortcut to your desktop.

Now take the "hosts.zip" file and extract the small file to your desktop. This next step will get tricky so make sure to follow these steps.

1.) Click "Start" lower left side of your screen
2.) Now Click "My Computer" usually on the right side below your "My Picture" and "My Music" Folders...
3.) When the My Computer box opens, in the address bar type the bold text "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc"
4.) Now take the host file you Downloaded and drop it in the "etc" folder. This should ask you to overwrite a file, click yes or okay
5.) Close all the windows

Now double click the L2 shortcut icon you made and let the game load. This should bring you to the Lineage login Info and it will ask you for the following info.

ID:
PWD:

Now your ID is going to be your account name, so fill out whatever name you want in the "ID" slot. This is what you will use to log into BTT's L2 Server everytime you login. Now you must also fill in a Password in the "PWD:" filed this will be your Password that will stay with your ID, so don't forget it.

Once you create your ID and PWD click "Log In" and the terms of use agreement will pop up, click on "Agree"

Now select the only server in the list "Bartz" and make your character..... pretty easy. If you have any questions feel free to post them here.

Now go level up and invite your friends! The more the better!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Thankfully this server is running at 30X, so you will level up faster than normal. Makes the game more fun

this is against their TOS, this is the same as pirating which is against the forums rules.

there's plenty of torrents out there for games too, doesn't make it legal or ok to do though.

why would they let people have their own private servers when they still charge for the game and subscriptions? just look at the TOS and you'll see.

Got this from wiki.

By the second half of 2004, the official Lineage II server code was leaked and a significant number of private servers appeared. One illegal modification of the official client allowed a player to connect to non-official servers. L2J, an open source server emulator, which obtained a GNU License, now has legal rights to produce such emulated servers and host them as long as certain bylaws are enforced, those of which include no modifications to the client in any way.

I even remember a thread made on the OT section that was advertising a L2 server, was never even locked.

Are private servers legal? According to NCSoft, no, they are not.

Question:
Are private servers legal?

Answer:

Lineage II is the exclusive intellectual property of NCsoft Corporation. It is protected by copyright law in the United States and throughout the world. Any unauthorized copying of the Lineage II software is a crime. Copyright law provides for severe civil and criminal penalties for the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted material. This includes all Lineage II software and accompanying sounds, images, and text. Furthermore, use of Lineage II in any way constitutes your agreement to all terms and conditions of the User Agreement.
NCsoft actively and aggressively enforces its intellectual property rights. If you know of any private servers, please report them using the Ask a Question tab.

you might want to read ToS section 3.

If you scroll down to 7 you can see this.

You further agree not to create or provide any other means through which Lineage II may be played by others, as through server emulators. You acknowledge that you do not have the right to create, publish, distribute, create derivative works from or use any software programs, utilities, applications, emulators or tools derived from or created for Lineage II, except that you may use the Software to the extent expressly permitted by this Agreement.

There are 2 types of L2 Server, L2J or L2Off. L2Off is leaked/recoded files and are illegal to use. I haven't on the other hand heard of many servers being taken down by ncsoft, unlike Blizzard who took down a lot of emulated servers.

I actually recently heard that NC Soft decided to start doing their job. I don't play L2 anymore, but I can tell you this: they banned a WHOLE bunch of accounts for botting. A couple of my friends saw their accounts meet the ban stick and they all lost lvl 70+ characters.

I dunno if my account met the ban stick, too, because I don't play anymore and haven't checked, but it's nice to see that the botters are going down. But I loved training bots :p I had so much fun doing that with my friends.

L2j has the rights to give out access to making Free online servers, they own the GUI for the game which they have full legal access to give out and offer free servers. others are also able to benefit from this as well.

Show us exactly where NCSoft has granted L2J rights to their IP, and then it's legal. Just because a project has a GNU License doesn't mean squat, especially in it's legality.

You acquire a game, you agree to the EULA, and unfortunately you're bound to the wording of the EULA. NCSoft's EULA does NOT grant you the right to connect to anything other than it's own servers. I hate EULA's as much as the next person, but until the laws are changed for the better, you do NOT own the software and hence cannot do whatever the hell you want to with it.

hmm...who do we believe, a bunch of people on a forum and wiki or the company that owns the game?

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing myself. It's a shame congress writes such stupid laws such as the reverse engineering laws. How the hell are you supposed to "improve" upon something if you can't implement a new way on how it works in the first place.

Again, I stress - this is NOT legal, and just because it has a "GNU License" doesn't mean it is.
