Line In will not mute

I just did a fresh install of windows XP and the Creative X-FI drivers. The mic & speakers work fine. However, when I blow air into the mic I can hear it coming back thru the speakers. Usually, I just mute line-in and it fixes the problem. For some reason it is not working anymore. I unistalled/reinstalled the x-fi drivers twice. Still doesn't work.

If I unmute Line-In the problem the "control panel" sound control mutes microphone.

This used to work. What am I missing?
