Line filters necessary for DSL?

Do line filters really make a difference for DSL in the home? If DSL is down, my backup 56K modem connection rates are cut in half with the filters installed. The DSL is on a separate, dedicated data line connected to the PC and no phones, faxes, etc. are connected to this line.

not sure, but I would like to know myself.

They told me at the phone company that I had to use filters on all the phones that had a phone connected to it. They didn't say anything about a 56k modem.

I have my dsl setup on a separate line with no filters as well. the best way to find out is use the phone without the filter. if it works you dont need filter.

by the way keep in mind mine is on a separate line. not the phone line to the house.

Well, my filters plug into the wall socket, which means easy to disconnect. However I only put it on the single phone I have hooked up.

Best setup for DSL is a frequency splitter where the phone line enters the house, then a straight cable run to the DSL line's wall jack.

When I first go DSL installed, they didn't give me any filters and I got a lot of static on my phone calls while my DSL modem was on. Luckily, the installation tech gave us his cell phone number and he dropped by the next day with half a dozen filters.
