That said ... my favorite chocolate is "Rogue Chocolate Stout"

Oh dear god yes!!

KT

Southern Tier?s Chokolat Stout > *

Never heard of Southern Tier; is it available everywhere? I absolutely love Rogue!

KT

Its around.....prob not everywhere though. It is still a smaller production. Made in NY so you got a better chance in the tri state, new england areas. Although there was someone on a forum posting about it in ohio......so i dunno.

Not likely around here then, though I'll check with my local brewmaster to see if he knows it and can get some in. I'm always up for trying something new.

I just bought a bar last night! How weird to see this thread.

It's good. I love dark chocolate, but I think 85% is pushing even my limits.

I like stuff in the 70% range a little better, I think. I don't tend to just eat a sliver of it, though.

An entire bar? Damn. I admit that I tend to eat two of the little squares though :( One just isn't enough... two is just right.

Chocolate mimics the chemicals in the brain from sex. Obviously she has made her choice.

There is a bar, I'm not sure what company, but is plays up being Fair Trade. It costs about 3.50. Milk Chocolate. The smoothest I've ever had. I think it is from Columbia/Peru. Can probably find it at any organic type place.

This sounds like snooty elitism, but it's really not. In this case, it is actually the truth. I can vouch for it through quite a bit of personal experience. Allow me to dispense the ultimate chocolate wisdom:

The stuff they have in Europe makes products you buy off the shelf here in the States seem unfit for swine. That includes the "upper tier" brands like Lindt.

I am not kidding. Take your ass across the ocean, and buy some chocolate. You're going to realize you haven't actually had chocolate before this. It will be like an epiphany.

Don't argue...don't try to justify it...don't try to get information from other people to find out if I'm right. I fucking am. There's no debating to be done here. Go over there, get the stuff. You won't even care after that.

Occasionally you can find decent stuff imported over here (Ritter-Sport comes directly to mind), but with the increasing prevalence of chain stores (and the continuing decline of any sense of dignity or taste in America), it gets more and more difficult.

I loved Lindt. Love it even more with the Lindt retail outlet prices. But if given a choice, I prefer Guylian seashell shaped chocolates first.

Most in america want milk chocolate.

Most find good chocolate too bitter growing up being served what 'chocolatiers' consider junk.

To me it's what someone likes. At our office this whole new chocolate marketing has people debating the hershey's in the vending machines.

Lidnt's 85% is stunningly good chocolate in it's class, especially given the fact that it is easily and cheaply available. It is almost certainly the best chocolate bar that you can pick up in most grocery stores IMO. The 70%, in my opinion is merely decent - holds its own against the mid-tier brands (like ghiradeli, dolfin and nirvana), but gets blown out by some of the top-tier brands like Amadei, Domori, Michel Cluizel and Valrhona's offerings in the 70ish percent category. The 85% can easily stand in it's cocoa percent category against the heavy hitters (funnily, Valrhona, who makes good choclate overall, makes the worst 85% bar ever), and in my opinion, might even be the best 85% range bar around.

Lindt is made in France. However, it is very possible that what they sell in the US differs to what they sell in Europe. Many companies make different Products for different Markets, but use the same name/labeling. It is possible that Lindt is really mediocre compared to others in Europe though. We North Americans just gotta go on with what we have . :(

I dunno. I really enjoyed the 85% Ghirardelli bar I was given.

Sigh. I don't know where to start.... Firstly, let me agree with you on the fact that Europeans (especially the french and italian manufacturers) make some of the best chocolate around. However, this is no reason the disparage american artisan chocolatiers. Companies like Schaffen Berger, Amano, DeVries and E. Guittard produce exceptionally good chocolate consistenly. By blindly claiming European chocolate > American Chocolate, you're making the same mistake that people who bash american beers do : ignore the exceptionally high quality artisan movement in the US that is prevalent in both arenas. If anything, this trend is increasing, which would go contrary to your claim of lowering standards in the US.

BTW, Lidnt's dark chocolates are made in Europe (France to be particular), so your own example is flawed. You've mentioned Ritter Sport. Care to mention any of the other brands you've had in europe? I'm just curious....

I've been hunting for that 95% bar.(I think it's 99%)?... it seems very elusive. I saw it once at a bookstore, but it was gone next time I came back, and I can't find it elsewhere(including online stores). Where did you buy it?

IMO anything over 80% is just too bitter. They sell 100% bars at Target.

Do yourself a favor and try Global Exchange Milk Chocolate. MMMMMM Good!

edit:: my boyfriend posted the above, but I do agree that I'm not a huge fan of over 80%, unless it's baked into something (we made blondies a while back with t he 80%, and they were excellent).

I went to Lithuania a few years ago and I must say, we're getting gipped when it comes to candy bars. I'm not talking fancy chocolate shop chocolate (although that was damn good), but just the candy bars you get at a convenience store. And Kraft makes them! But nooo, they can't sell their good stuff over here. Stupid Kraft.

I think it is 99% actually. I have about 4 squares left, but I don't have the packaging anymore.

I bought it at the Lindt store in Atlanta. They have a ton of varieties. I have a few bars of 80% (I think) Peruvian as well. Hard to beat it for the price, imo.

This has to be a troll, right? European fanboyism like this is really annoying. People do it with wine, coffee, beer, chocolate and just about everything else. Mostly it's derived from ignorance and an egregious appeal to the more "romantic" qualities of the European products.

If you think Ritter Sport is an example of this epiphany, I conclude that you haven't actually tasted any of the chocolates you're dismissing or you're just out of your mind. It's not like a lot of us haven't been to Europe, and Ritter Sport isn't exactly elusive.

It's funny how with the popularity of chocolate (like cigars, bitch beers, shaving products, and day trading) all of the sudden everyone is an expert and has experienced 99% of the category :)
