<< When do they have to release the code? When they release the product? I believe the GPL says that when you make the binaries available you have to make the source available. Since the binaries that have been sent out are sent out to beta testers, Id still consider them as not released to the public. Unless of course you consider Kazaa as a public release. Robertson said he will release source later. Id wait and see what happens when 1.0 is released myself. >>

i dunno, i am not a gpl expert/evangelist, but i dont find it surprising that people have issues with lindows' "use" of gpl software....i know this isnt exactly a real technical opinion, but it just *feels* like lindows is out to kick MS in the nads, and isnt really all that jazzed for the open source community.
>>

Im sure most people that read my posts know that Im not a huge fan of the GPL, so I may be way off base. But I think I read a while back that Robertson plans on releasing source when the time comes for a 1.0 type release. We will see what happens.
>>

i'm not exactly a GPL freak ( i have probably never actually read the thing :Q) but i am pretty suspicious of the lindows guy (too lazy to look for his name).

we'll see what happens when its officially released, until then, i'm not breaking a sweat :p

Jobs didn't save apple, far from it.

when microsoft was gaining ground very fast and apple was losing it just as fast, Gates actually wanted to work with Jobs, Gates wanted microsoft to make software for Apple computers but Jobs said no. as a result, you won't find Apple computers at your local office anymore, they are all wintel clones because Jobs screwed it up. there's no offices around here that use Apple anymore, all wintel.

Jobs left Apple. Idiots got charge of Apple and decided to allow Apple clones. Apple was very close to dying. Jobs went back to Apple for an AMAZING $1/yr salary. Jobs created the iMac. Apple has record sales. Jobs saved Apple. Microsoft has the second largest Macintosh development team in the world. They are only second to Apple. internet explorer and Office both run on Macs. They dont run my Mac, but can. Jobs saved Apple. Microsoft helped.

What does seeing Macs in offices have to do with Jobs saving Apple? :)

if offices don't have them and regular people don't have them then who does?
most people for home use have windows because they:
-play games
-don't know how to use Linux
-windows does everything they need
-store computers come with windows

the rest of the home users most likely use Linux for running servers and to play with. none of my real friends or internet friends have a mac built within the past 8 years. the 1 friend who does have a mac has a PowerPC from quite a few years back because a presentation from apple computers when he went on his field trip showed that he could run windows games on mac......he was pissed off when he found out they never actually planned to release that software (and never did).

the only places i have seen with macs are schools, my high school has about 30 macs but they have about 150 wintels along side that.

Plenty of people:

Professionals - I know plenty of *VERY* intelligent people (as in I dont compare) that use Macs.
Musicians - Macs were the best for a while, and they still compete.
Artists - Both movie and image editting works very well on a Mac.

I dont. So whatever. This is a known "problem" with Macs, so Ill give you this one.

<< -don't know how to use Linux >>

Why bother learning right? :)

<< -windows does everything they need >>

Not for me! :)

<< -store computers come with windows >>

I bought my Mac at a store. Imagine that.

<< variety is why there is Linux, FreeBSD and BeOS :D
they's all free ;)
>>

So is Mac OS X. And it runs on a great many platforms, just like FreeBSD, a whole 2! BeOS is dead. I dont consider Linux to be a viable desktop OS at this time, and I really dont think it should be made into one.

But since you think Im an idiot for supporting Apple, Ill let you deal with the tech issues I deal with here. Ill wait for your posts from now on. Hopefully anyone that would normally PM me with questions will go to you instead. This could be interresting. Good luck :)

I am by no means, a mac person . Not that I don't like them, I have never worked within the operate, besides running Mac Test Pro. However, I do have to take the little critters apart, ALL the time. I can say that I respect Apple. You can see how they have helped to motivate and push technology accross the globe. From the Apple II's(I know they go back further) to the Dual G4's. I wouldn't mind having an iBook or a PowerBook, my only beef with Apple, is that I'm used to being pampered with 3+ buttons on my mouse :disgust:

BTW, one of my boss's did a funny thing today. I'm over in my hole installing Linux Mandrake over my old FBSD apache box (all because they want a 'dumbed down Unix'). I go over to his bench and see he's eMailing Lindows... He was simply telling them that we (a county office of Ed) were going to be setting up multiple apache web servers, and he wanted to know if Lindows could offer us anything that the other distro's couldn't. I assured him that they couldn't :p but he knew thath... He just wanted to get a reaction from them, see what kind of a company they were. He wanted to know if they simply wrote back 'yes' or responded with some bloated letter about how they are better than anyone else, or to see if they were honest, and said 'any distro would work, we are just trying to give the consumer another choice, blah, blah...' I'm waiting to see what they wrote back, I have to wait till monday...

why would you think FreeBSD is more of a desktop thing than Linux is?
they work on the same filing system but Linux just has way more support, it's easier to use and more people know about it.

BeOS is still being made, even though Be is dead, the OS lives on and it's updating continualy.

I didnt quite say that. I said Mac OS X runs on as many platforms, which is kind of true. The OS runs on 2 platforms, just like FreeBSD (until they officially release a stable PPC/sparc(4u?) version).

<< they work on the same filing system >>

Yeah, but FreeBSD's native file system is good too. And chances are FreeBSD would not work as well on ext2fs or another Linux file system

<< but Linux just has way more support, it's easier to use >>

I disagree.

<< and more people know about it. >>

That definitely makes it better.

<< they weren't in Best Buy like 6 years ago either >>

I dont know, I dont think I went to best buy 6 years ago. I do know how ever that I saw BeOS cds at either Best Buy or CompUSA (or both) around a year ago.
