I just went to do an install of Lindows at my work bench, Any way i have one Monitor there, and its hooked to a 4 port Tripp-Lite switch box, During the install of lindows the screen keep going blank and i could not figure out why. I finnaly booted the machine, and switched to a diffrent channel on my switch box. When i switched back, the install was going through ok, then the screen shut off. Finnaly i realized that the switch box had something to do with it, so i took it to another station, where the same problem occured. Then i hooked it direct into a monitor mouse and keyboard, and it worked great. Anyone else have experinces with this? is it just the trip lite switch boxes that it doesnt like??

Thanks

If you want something cool to play with download the latest SuSE demo disk. It's an entire OS that will just run from a cd. If you like it you can install the real deal using a SuSE ftp installer cd, or you can try out Redhat's install disks or something like that. Probably a lot nicer then just Lindows. But if you like Lindows, good for you. :)

Plus the SuSE disk has a bonus memory tester built in it that you can run. (at least on the version I tried out). Could make it easier to troubleshoot memory problems. :)

I like Lindows 4 very much and I run it along side another dedicated PC running SuSe and use a Linksys KVM switch box and never have this problem, is the switch box bad maybe?

When it come to Linux operating systems.. I run one of two: Red Hat or Slackware.. They are the two oldest linux distros around and are the standards. Slackware has divine simplicity.. Red Hat holds the linux world by the nuts... After I get my bachelors in CIS I plan on getting Red Hat Certified Engineer... Like I say.. Red Hat is standard.. I feel im wasting my time on anything else. Surprisingly Red Hat has kept it together all these years and still has an uncommercial rebel feel.... cause u gotta be a rebel when you run linux. Lindows just makes me cringe... try slackware

While I agree Lindows is a much less "traditional" distro and while Michael Robertson has taken a different approach with Lindows and he has also alienated many of the others in the Linux community (not including M$) and also I don't want this to become a distro bashing thread, so unless you have actually used Lindows you need not bash it unless you have used it and found reason to blast it. With that being said, I have tried virtually every distro out there and have my favorites too but I have to say as of right now, Lindows for me works better than any distro I have tried in many aspects, this is why we have choices.

I have always just used RedHat because it was good, but robisc brought up how nice lycoris looks and I think I might try that out.

The main thing that people who are used to using regular Linux distros is that Lindows runs you as root as default. That opens you up to all sorts of things that Linux is normally able to easily avoid, and would normally be considured a unforgivable flaw..(aviod stuff like virus's, accidently frying your install, hacker defense, etc etc) This is kinda one of those "if this is indicative of the attitude of the creater then..." things that makes people avoid it.

One of the first reasons that I will not run Lindows. I have tried version 2 & 3. Both did not have a lot of the basics installed by default. gcc and glibc have to be installed by Click and Run. Therefore you cannot install any application that requires you to compile it. This makes no sense on linux as most of the good apps require you to compile things.

Lycoris was alright but I found that they made it difficult to get to the command line.

Linux is linux is linux.

Mandrake is a good place to start. I suggest Redhat next, then Gentoo (for the hardcore look at how to do everything one at a time.) or maybe LFS. Once you get done with Gentoo or LFS then you will either go with something that you know or you will check out Deb or any one of the other distros.

I have a similar problem with a computer I bought recently. It goes to my monitor through a Belkin KVM switch and when I restart the computer occasionally the monitor will refuse to show any picture and the KVM switch will not respond to the keyboard sequence used to switch to another computer. The sequence is to double-press Scroll Lock, it will beep, then you press the Up or Down arrow key, it will beep again and switch you. So, when it freezes like this, double-pressing Scroll Lock does not emit a beep and the arrow keys do nothing. However, if you turn off the computer after double-pressing the keys, the KVM switch will beep as soon as you shut it off.

If you don't turn off the computer, then the only way to switch to another computer is to use a button on the switch itself. Quite annoying.

I know that I have similar troubles with a nforce2 board, unless I have the monitor plugged in at bootup (I think) it tries to go out the onboard tv-out... As you might imagine this is something that is pretty rare.
