Went to see Lincoln last night. I was disappointed. I probably slept through numerous high school and college history classes and the civil war was not real popular with me, but the movie was basically lots of speeches and sounded like someone reading from my old history book for about 2.5 hours. BORING! A friend brought me to a Civil War reenactment, and the movie had much of this. Yes, the movie reenactment was more lifelike with lots of wounded and dismemberments, but overall I gave this movie a 1.5 on a scale of 5 (5 being best). It was too long, and had too many speeches. I can see why a month or more ago the movie Lincoln the vampire slayer, or something like this was added to his life to spice things up. This movie sucked. If you are a Lincoln history buff and like to see Mary Todd (Sally Field) looking over weight, mean and naggy, you might like this movie.

The last 3 sentences of this post basically cement the fact that you're an idiot.

Were you going to watch Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter and went to this by mistake?

I was initially interested, but the commercials for the movie have really turned me off from it. At least, the lines they chose for the ads sound very contrived and as much as I like DDL, his Lincoln honestly just sounds cheesy.

What would Lincoln be doing if he were alive today?

<make clawing motions with your hands> He'd be trying to get out of his coffin.

Agree with this. Love Spielberg and DDL but judging by his performance as Lincoln from the commercials it seems a little over-the-top/ungenuine.

Didn't Lincoln have a reedy voice? I expect DDL is doing everything as historically accurate as possible, even if it doesn't make for the best movie experience.

seems to me it is continuing the pattern of re-writing history on Lincoln.

That's what I recall as well. His voice does not match what most people would expect. So I was pleasantly surprised by DDL's voice in the ads. Though, I don't really care about that period so I won't see this anyhow.

This movie is getting amazing reviews and the All Star cast is sick. I absolutely cannot wait to see it when I get the time.

I like the casting, but from what I've heard the story is incredibly sanitized compared to the real Lincoln, whom advocated expelling blacks back to Africa, suspended Habeus Corpus, and basically wasn't the squeaky-clean hero that is taught in public school and from what I can see, in this film.

Nah, it's not quite like that. It's not in your face, but I think you can see the difference between belief in equality before the law and belief in true racial equality in the various characters in the movie. Lincoln comes off as fairly human given the circumstances he was surrounded by.

As far as expulsion, I think it was more that it was the best choice in a limited set of options given the prevailing racist beliefs at the time (some of which Lincoln held).

I thought the movie seemed very long and boring at times, but it was far from terrible.

Saw it today before T-Day Chow Down Time. Daniel Day Lewis' performance was both stirring and sublime, as good as it humanly gets, a true tour de force.

The entire movie was magnificent. It was for . . . adults.

The snot-nosed little shit-tards of OT strutting their stuff in this thread are only exposing themselves for the simple-minded imbeciles that they are, just like the mean-spirited, asswipe, revisionist pseudo-historians who would sully this great man's name.

Abraham Lincoln wasn't perfect, no mortal is, but Goddamn you moral and intellectual pygmies to hell, he preserved the Union, the UNITED States of America.

Else, the absolute abomination of slavery would likely have continued to exist until the Nazis played us off against each other and then conquered both North and South.

Sieg Heil, shit for brains. :colbert:

Face it, there's not much new you can do with a Abe Lincoln movie.
It's historical and so much like reliving the pains of history class 101.
I felt the movie was your basic arm twisting to get your bill passed thru a divided congress.
Sound familiar???
I suppose one could toss in a vampire or two, or a homosexual sex scene between old Abe and ???
If anyone else had made this film it would have flopped.
But Spielberg has the power to get actors like Sally Fields and other big names.
I mean really... If Steven called you, wouldn't you go around for the next few months telling everyone you're appearing in that Spielberg film.
So naturally you take his call.

That was the best Lincoln I've seen, even though we really have no idea what the real Lincoln was like. Maybe he had the humor and voice of pee wee Herman for all we know.

I found it interesting only that it was so well done.
But the story itself has been repeated time after time.

My favorite Abe Lincoln movie (tv movie I believe) was THE GREAT MANS WHISKERS.
Now that's is a film I wish they would release.
