My GF loves Lemons, I saw this stuff at a liquor store tonight, never heard of it before. I'm sure somebody here has tried it and can help me out, it's not super expensive, like $20 but it might not even be worth that. Would like to hear from someone who can comment on how Lemony is it. She likes X-Rated & Hypnotiq, from the bottle I assumed this will be a sweeter drink?

any feedback would be great, I'm heading to see her possibly tomorrow and want to get her something different than Hyqnotiq for a change :)

Its very lemony. But its not a liquer you drink to get drunk per say.

Its an after dinner drink, usually served chilled. You wouldnt normally have more than one or two shots of it.

interesting, you're saying it's not something you drink more than a shot or 2 of because it's so sweet? the bottle said 40 proof I think? Which isn't really high but on par with Hynotiq, I find that too sweet but she'll drink a good size cup of it.

She loves lemons on everything so I'm guessing this will be right up her alley, I appreciate your mini review it helped me decide I need to get it, I think she'll drink more than a shot or 2, and 20% alcohol can get you pretty bent lol.

I've had it served to me after a meal at a restaurant once. Personally, I thought it was pretty bad.

No, you dont not drink more than a shot or two because its so sweet... Its just that its normally an after dinner drink.. Im not saying you CANT drink it alone or have a whole bottle if you please, just that its generally reserved for topping off a nice meal.

It was the after dinner drink of choice when I was in Florence. Serve it very cold and drink however much you want.

I have friend, Lenny the Ginny, who makes Lemoncello that's delicious, 80+ proof and knocks the shit out of you if you drink to much. I love it. The Lemon flavor comes from the Lemon Zest. He also makes Orangecello , cream Lemoncello and some kick ass port.

F that. You two can crush the bottle, and you will be drunk. It's sweet, but not so much that you can't drink it.

From what I gather, it's pretty easy to make and homemade/fresh usually tastes better than commercially produced...

HOMEMADE LIMONCELLO

Makes about 2 1/2 quarts.

Note: In Italy, limoncello is generally served after dinner as a digestive, often in chilled glasses. The author of this recipe uses organic lemons and the Microplane grater, a variation on a wood-working tool that is readily available in kitchen stores. Zest is finely grated peel; make sure not to grate the white pith of the lemon, which is bitter. The author uses half cheap vodka and half more expensive for the alcohol, though traditional recipes will call for clear grain alcohol that's 97%. She recommends a full five days for flavoring the vodka with the lemon. She prefers cane sugar, which is less processed white sugar, and is available at natural foods stores.

? 2 lb. lemons

? 1 quart (4 c.) clear grain alcohol such as vodka

? 6 c. purified water

? 2 1/2 c. cane (or granulated) sugar

Directions

With a very fine grater, zest the lemons. Put zest and vodka in a tightly sealed jar or bottle large enough to accommodate at least a quart of liquid.

Place container in a cool, dark and dry place for at least 3 to 5 days. Shake the jar at least twice a day. Zest will turn white when flavoring is done. Strain the zest from the liquid through a fine sieve; discard the zest and set aside the flavored vodka.

Place 6 cups water in a saucepan over low heat and add sugar. Heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves and syrup is clear.

Cool syrup to room temperature and mix with lemon vodka. Strain the sweetened lemon vodka through several changes of coffee filters and store in tightly sealed bottles in the refrigerator. Chill and enjoy.

*More traditional recipes call for steeping up to 60 days. However 3-5 will produce good results. Also, note that this does have a shelf life - that's the reason that the commercial ones generally don't taste as good.

Its also used by some bartenders to make a lemon drop martini, and if your girlfriend likes lemons and hasn't had a lemondrop yet, you might turn her into an alcoholic haha.

Vodka + Lemoncello + Lemonjuice + Sugar, shake and pour into sugar rimmed glass

cheers

I had it all the time in Italy. Lemons (and other citrus fruit) are grown all over that country and they love to serve limoncello after dinner.

My opinion? Skip it. While some of the higher end places in Italy sold ice cold homemade limoncello that was wonderful, the lower end places sold off the shelf stuff that really wasn't very good. I'm fairly certain what you saw at the liquor store wasn't good homemade stuff. If you do try it, be sure to stick it and your glasses in the freezer for a good long time before drinking any.

I am a big lemon fan, but this just didn't do it for me.

Yup. He makes it and likes it. He sent me some advice so I could use up some of the lemons from my tree making a batch.

I've had it in Italy ice cold and homemade and it's fantastic. Out of a bottle, I dunno. I'd rather look up a recipe and make it myself. I have a relative here who makes some for holidays and it's OK. She tends to be heavy handed on the alcohol, though.

Limoncello is one of the liquers that, in terms of taste and quality, is all over the place. Most homemade stuff taste likes paint thinner with a lemon oil finish; most store bought (in the US) tastes like you swallowed a bottle of sugary Pledge. Be forewarned: drinking something very cold means that it cannot stand alone in a moderate temperature (as it will taste like ass).

I assume your girlfriend likes very sweet alchohol? Try making a lemon drop martini:
2 oz citron vodka
1 oz Roses lime juice
served with a sugared rim.

I've had some that was store bought that wasn't bad... Tasted like Lemon heads.... It has to be chilled to taste decent though. I don't remember the brand off the top of my head....

Pallini limoncello is frickin delicious. If it's too strong for you, drop some 7up or mineral water in it. Seriously, the girls can't get enough of it and it's pretty damn strong on a hot day.

I made a drink with 1/4 limoncello, 1/4 vodka, some OJ and a dash of vermouth.. delicious and makes you feel great after one or two.

You really have to like lemons though.

As others have said, homemade can be delicious. Most of the better Italian restaurants make their own. If it is homemade, you generally get the real flavor of lemon zest. The lower quality, mass-manufactured kind seems to lose this character and you're left with more of a simple lemon flavor.

I like it, but I'd rather drink a Moscato after dinner if I'm trying to stick to something Italian.

My limoncello recipe, which was reciped from a military friends' dad that lives in Italy, takes a minimum of a month to make. If you are interested, PM me, and I'll send you the recipe and some tips that I've accumulated over the past few years of making it.

EDIT: And I have yet to try a store bought limoncello that was half as decent as a bad homebrew batch. They are usually too harsh...

I am glad I got the feedback I did here, I don't have a month to make it homemade, I'm going to see her tomorrow. I picked up a $25 bottle, even if it's not the best I hope she likes it, she loves Lemon so it should be at worst drinkable. 32% alcohol means it won't take too much to get her tipsy, it's a 750ML bottle.
