It depends on the state, but in most States you cannot tint (very dark) the two front door windows. This was brought about because when a police officer stops you, he wants to be able to see in your car. Sounds sort of odd though, because he has to walk past the dark tinted glass of the rear door and would have no idea if the person behind this glass had a gun or not. Anyway, the police actually have an electronic tester to measure the tint on windows. I've seen others take a pack of cigarettes and by holding them 6 inches away, you should be able to read the surgeons warning through the tint. If you had a professional shop do the tint, ask them if it is legal. They are supposed to check your license plate to see if they are legal in placing the tint on your vehicle, and for what darkness as most states differ on this.

As far as I understand, the shop should provide you with a certificate stating that your tinting meets the legal requirements. That way if you get stopped you have something to defend yourself with.

I live in NYS and the tint on my front windows was 35%. The legal limit here is 71%. I was stopped by a sheriff and he did the reading and then gave me a ticket. But there is hope, illegal tint is like having a tail light out, they give you a chance to fix it before you are charged money. So you can take the tint off and then have a mechanic sign a piece of paper saying you did, and you won't get into any trouble. (that's the route i took)

Generally police won't pull you over unless you are doing something else wrong, but it does give them an excuse, so be careful. Some of my friends have been made to tear their tint off at the time of being pulled over, but that generally doesn't happen.

If you really look at it, most cars on the road have something illegal about them (did you know it's illegal in most states to hang something off of your rear-view mirror?) but in general you'll be ok as long as you're obeying the traffic laws and don't catch an officer on a bad day.

YEAH, kinda like the clear tail light thing, most only get pulled over in the late nights, but its to get people off the streets and out of trouble, or so we are told. obviously i didnt get the tint done legit, but i looks real professional just illegal.

when i got my inspection done, they made me take my intake out and put factory in. when they were done, i pulled out and changed back to aftermarket right in front of their garage.

I've heard of caps taking a razor blade and cutting triangles out of every tinted window so you'll have to get it removed. I've heard of fix-it tickets.. get it fixed or pay the fine and still have to get it fixed. I've heard of people driving around with 5% tint for years with no troubles.. Depends on the cops in your area.

I also heard about a cop who took a razor blade and cut a slot in the tint. He was repramanded for damaging a vehicle and had to pay for new tint along with a new glass, because there was just the edge of a scratch from the razor blade.

TIP - If you ever get stopped by the police for a front window tint issue, just roll the windows down before the officer approaches the vehicle. With the windows down, there is no offense. If they write you a ticket anyway, make sure the ticket states that the front windows were down before the officer approached the vehicle. The judge will most likely dismiss.
