want to limit use of my printer to my desktop and my laptop. Printer is hooked up to desktop running windows xp. laptop is running XP. Right now print access is granted to Everyone on my network. Anyway to limit this to just users from my computers? Tried to delete everone account but can only add new accounts from users on desktop. sorry if this doesnt make any sense

Just remove the "Allow" checks under the Security tab in the printer's Properties page, then add accounts for your desktop and laptop to the share. may have to use User Management on the desktop to add the laptop user.

Thanks. I could not figure out how to add the laptop user as a user on the desktop. ill try it now 🙂

Tried to do it in the printer options but when I choose to add user the desktop is the only location available. Both computers are networked and can share files as such.

Hmmmmm is there a place to add users/locations in windows xp, that I am missing?

yes I am an admin. I dont think XP is capable of doing this. There doesnt appear to be anyway to add another user of a different computer as a user. Only recognizes desktop as a location and not other computers on the network.

You have to add an account for the laptop user that they logon to your computer with. When they want to map your printer, it will ask them for a username and password. Unless you have a domain controller, your computer will not be able to see accounts for others on the network. You aren't logging into a central point, you have many computers on your network. This means that winxp only sees whats accounts are on the machine you are using. XP is capable of doing what you want just by creating the user, going to security and removing the everyone group if it's still there, then add the account for the laptop user that you created. This way, nooone else cna print except for you as part of the administrators group, which should be there, and the laptop user who you have created an account for. Make sure to give them manage documents permissions if you want them to be able to cancel documents that are printing.
