limited resolutions for display

hey just built a new rig, and i am having troubles of only being able to set to only 7 different resolutions. I have a Samsung 24" monitor and hook to DVI through 8800 GT. The thing is, I got 16:10 resolutions (like 1920x1200), but not 16:9 resolutions (1920x1080, 1280x720, etc).

I tested this out with a different PCi-E card connected via VGA cable and I get all the resolutions.

Why is that with the setup, I am limited to only 7 resolutions?

I am currently using nvidia 169.21 drivers for XP SP2 and have a Samsung 245B.

Why do you need 16:9 resolutions on a 24" monitor? I think that it only shows resolutions that can be displayed by the monitor, or something like that... at any rate, you could always go into the nVidia control panel and set your own custom resolutions if you're dying for 16:9 that badly.

The only reason i waant the other resolutions is because I want more resolutions settings when im in game ( I wanna play crysis on 1280x720).

I went to nvidia control panel to force custom res. (like 1280 x 720), but i get a panning effect (1280x720), or the screen becomes really distorted (1920x1080).

Strange thing is, when I connected a old PCI-E card to my monitor I got all the resolutions (including 16:10, 16:9, etc), and all the resolutions worked. But with 8800 GT via DVI, I wont let me choose the other resolutions (only 16:10).

You monitor is 16:10 and you are trying to display a 16:9 resolution on it. You seem to have seen those 1280x720 videos on InCrysis I have been wondering why they have chosen a 16:9 resolution to show a PC game.

You could be able to select a 16:9 resolution with letterboxing using options available in the NVidia Control panel, in the Resolutions/Custom Resolutions panels.

Alternatively, if 1280x800 is a bit too taxing, 1152x720 is a nice Custom 16:10 resolution that you can create and use.

the scaling abilities of the 245b arent very good. Best to stick to 16x10 resolutions, and for text its best to use either native (1920x1200) or if you must, 1400x900 (1680x1050 looks worse for some reason).

For games just choose a 16:10 resolution that runs fine on your system. I have a 8800GT and run crysis at 1680x1050 with settings at medium high (some settings at medium, some at high)
