limited or no connectivity

Hi everyone, I'm having this limited or no connectivity problem. I'm dual booting into both Vista Business and Win XP Pro. I get same error in both OS. I've try changing ethernet cables, but that doesn't help either. My desktop computer was set up for static ip address but I changed that to "obtain ip automatically". However, that didn't help either.

I've also tried 'ipconfig /renew'. I get an error message saying "an error occured while renewing interface Local Area Connection 6: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. I've also try uninstalling NIC through Device Manager.

Nothing so far has helped.

BTW, my motherboard is MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. One is nVidia and other is Marvell Yukon port. I've tried everything I said on both.

So I guess my question is, could this be due to faulty ports? motherboard dieing? Anything else I can try before I go purchase PCI LAN Card? Please help.

What are you using for a DHCP server? I am guessing that it is your Internet gateway? If so, do other devices successfully receive a DHCP address?

I get that every so often and the culprit is my linksys router. After I unplug the router's power for a minute and plug it back in, it works fine again for a while.

Problem solved. All I did was kept my computer off overnight, reset Linksys router in the morning, and voila.. it works!

This is so random. I reset the router last night like gazillion times but it didn't work at that time and it worked in the morning. Anyway, thanks a lot nightowl and eplebnista.

I really want to throw my linksys router in the trash now.. I just spent 12 hours messing with this SAME issue... reloaded Vista.. went to XP.... XP again tons O updated drivers and FINALLY I saw this thread. Rebooted the crappy Linksys and IT WORKS NOW. Odd thing.. My other 3 PC's have NEVEr had this problem, not until I tried building my new GA-N680-DQ6 did this happen.. Thanks for the obvious suggestion... I needed a pointer!
