The news had a story about hollywood wanting to put a limit on how many times you can view a DVD. Has anyone heard of this. I missed the actually story.

I think if they do this I will go back to VHS. Either that or they better start charging $5 per movie.

It's called DIVX which was strongly supported by Circuit City and it's DEAD.

If he's talking abou a recent news story, then it's not about DivX. Its a bill introduced by someone that would give a customer a certain number of movie views after which it will be unplayable unless you pay again. The movie industry is becoming more like the RIAA by pulling all this cockamamie bullsh!t

I saw a thread about this on dvdtalk.com, but dont have a link to it

Lucas was a strong supporter of Star Wars movies, and we saw how that turned out. ;)

I belive they might be talking about a chemical process on the DVD. After so many reads over a sector, it deteriates to the point its unreadable.

Don't think it'll receive much support.

Just use your new DVD burner that are getting cheaper and cheaper, and faster... Copy it, and just watch the burned copy, only one read over any given sector, heh.

$5 is my price point to watch a movie (say) 5 times spread out over infinity, i.e. I don't have to watch everything within a few days (which IMHO, was the worst part of the DIVX scheme.. wasn' t it 3 days?), AND I don't have to tell someone each and every time I decide to watch it. I'd be more than happy to shell out "full" price for an infinite play version if I really liked it after going through the same movie five times but damnit, let me pick when I use my limited views without someone holding my hand along the way!
