I think you're right. John Dvorak mentioned it in his Inside Track article several issues back in PC Magazine. I believe he said something to the effect "Hey, that's a great idea, lets make them so they warp if you leave them out in the sun too" implying that we'd be basicly going back to record players.

Let them try it. Some geek'll figure out how to fix that with a black felt tip marker.

LMAO! If they start using that dye-degrade DVD, you bet that they'll also jack the cost of those DVDs as well to cover "increased manufacturing costs for new technology." Heck, when I was in Taiwan I started seeing "Copy Protect CDs" that were real Avex CD maxi singles and nobody seemed to be buying them... even for $~1USD. The Vanessa Carlton CD was selling for ~$6USD... real deal all over the place... Linkin Park's latest album was going for ~8USD. Yet even BestBuy still sells us CDs at $10 with retail set at $17? the MPAA & RIAA can kiss our black marker wielding @$$.

The biggest kick I got when I was reading about those new copy-protected CDs from Sony was that it would kill Macs... LOL!!

DIXV, a DVD rental system, was promoted by Circuit City, Radio Shack, and several (very few) others. The system used a DVD player with a phone line that you had to sign up for an account that would authorize the disc's playback, . The system was slow, expensive, and very poorly executed. It was also circumvented very easily. The discs were serialized DVD-V's, sort of like what we use today. The main difference was the player. PC-DVD drives and cheap players helped kill it quickly.
