Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but this strikes me as a dick move. Instead of getting a properly tested multi-platform jailbreak, Geohot releases a beta-quality exploit that he's been sitting on for ages, and because it was a mere day earlier we'll have to use it instead because now it would be a bad idea to release SHAtter. The worst case scenario is that due to the information on SHAtter 2 bootrom exploits have been burnt through, and the best case scenario is still something that needs more time in the oven because it wasn't as well tested as Greenpois0n.

Getting this jailbreak less than a day earlier than Greenpois0n hardly seems worth the trouble it caused. So I'm just going to say it: it's a dick move by Geohot, and probably done for egotistical (e.g. all the wrong) reasons.

Don't confuse SHAtter (an exploit) with Limera1n (a jailbreak). A complete jailbreak kit is composed of 1 or more exploits along with the means of patching the kernel and any payloads required (e.g Cydia). The SHAtter exploit will not be used, however the Greenpois0n jailbreak using Geohot's exploit will apparently be released soon.

So there will be a better jailbreak kit coming along, it just will use the same bootrom exploit.

If it's unstable then i'm not seeing it. I don't have a 3GS(or ipod of that gen) - since well i don't so i can't speak for that.

Ipod 4/iphone 4/ipad 3g = no problemo.

One might think that cooking a rom (pwnagetool) to not upgrade the baseband (saving an unlock) might cause more problems. The baseband = the modem. It uses those fancy ATDT commands Would be like upgrading from XP to VISTA but using the old drivers = might work - might be unstable - who knows?

Anyways green poision will now use the limera1n exploit - so its like REDHAT versus UBUNTU - two same ways (linux kernel+libs) to skin a bird.

I'm just reporting it works for me - as always use your noggin and best sense. Worst case is a restore using your SHSH blobs which you should have from 4.0.1 to 4.1 (3.2 to 3.2.2 on ipad).

Unlockers would be stupid to upgrade to 4.1 - but this is not news it's been posted for months "It's a trap" on iphone dev team blog - heck i think its dumb to upgrade to 4.1 unless you need to call ipod facetimers - 4.0.1 works fine. I got the ipod to check out 4.1 and call other facetimers (to date i have two facetime buddies; one lives with me lol)

I agree. I miss 3.1.3. Apps started requiring OS 4 however, so I was forced to upgrade.

I love Slacker Radio, but now I'm using Pandora instead, which I believe worked fine with 3.1.3....

OR, I just could've not updated my apps!!!

yeah if you jailbreak you can Ztoggle wallpapers(uses gfx chip) and multitasking on any ios4 device on/off.

iphone has 512meg - ipad 3g has 256 meg - thats a huge difference. kinda like how folks started running xp with 256-512 meg but nobody has less than 2-3gb nowadays. the wierd thing is the lag is not consistent and swap is off. if they enabled swapfile i could understand maybe they have some internal paging system on ios4 now.

Ive been ok with 4.1 on my 3G. Runs slower but at least it's usable.

So does this jailbreak work with the current iPad OS, or just the 4.2 beta? I'm guessing the latter.

3G uses pwnagetool for 4.1 or 4.2b2 iirc -

limera1n is not for unlockers - upgrading the baseband would lock you out. do not use limera1n if you are unlocking ever. no point here since its AT&T 3G or EDGE (t-mobile) and edge sucks.

greenpoisin is supposed to be limera1n with a way to brute an upgrade to 4.1 without upgrading the baseband from 4.0 allowing you to unlock.

Ipod 4th and ipad wifi have no modem (aka baseband) so they don't have anything to unlock.

ipad? 3.2,3.2.1 use jailbreakme, 3.2.2 use limera1n

4.2 will close up these holes i'm guessing

apple tv 2nd gen works on limera1n too not sure why you'd want to jb it
