Rush should support her merely on the principal that the president should be given broad deference in his appointments. Absent any evidence that Sotomayor is either incompetent or ethically-compromised, she should be confirmed. To the best of my knowledge, neither of those disqualifications has been demonstrated to date. Hence, she is fit for the job.

Rush has an influence that makes me wonder why even well educated conservatives accept his views as mainstream. His credibility is suspect and his reputation is tainted by his own failings.

The Sotomayor flip-flop as well as Newt Gingrich's reversal indicates that when people shoot off their mouths about their true feelings concerning race, you can bet that they will change their tune when the backlash arrives.

why does anyone care about Rush Limbaugh?

seriously.

It isn't so much him but all the dim bulbs who believe his bullshit.

Unfortunately they get to vote.

couldn't you just as easily say the same about everyone who watches Michael Moore movies or thinks that Al Gore is the second coming?

there's stupid on both sides of the aisle, why give asswipes free publicity?

True but Gore and Moore aren't on the radio M-F. Problem is the sane faction of the GOP is afraid of him. It's embarrasing to see elected officials get on their knees and service this fat gasbag. The actual Apology Tour are members of the GOP begging for his forgiveness.

Whats really funny is the millions of righties that buy his bullshit hook line and sinker because they are incapable of forming opinions on their own. If you people like you didn't have someone like Rush to do the thinking for you, who knows what would happen.

In the final analysis, Limbaugh, IMHO, is more a thorn in the paw of the GOP than a problem for the democrats.

At best, only 25% of the GOP electorate supports Limbaugh type ideas, and when far to many in the GOP leadership pee their pants over alienating Rush, there is just an inherent disconnect. And there is just something deeply upside down when the 25% percent tail is allow to drive the three times larger body.

We have to look no further back than the Republican primaries of 2008 to see the proof, because while Rush was touting the more conservative GOP Presidential candidates , the two people Limbaugh especially wanted to go down, namely McCain and Huckabee, were the last two standing. And Rush's top choice, Fred Thompson, polled miserably and dropped early.

But when I listen to Limbaugh, I have one rock solid guiding principle, never never never buy anything from anyone who sponsors Rush. Its been a very easy decision, 2020 hindsight, because I can't think of a single Rush sponsor worth buying from.

The anology is ludicrous.
The Dems would never nominate Jesus.
He's against gay sex and murdering unborn children.

Rush and the Right ? Projecting the low road...

The interesting thing about guys like Rush is their continual projection of their own character when they try to access the character of others. Rush is very comfortable and unapologetic about his own racism which makes it so easy for him to see racism in others. When confronted with a person, who most assuredly has experienced some sexism and racism in her life, achieving a position of authority there are two options to consider.

1. The person will use their experience as a target of racism to work hard to try to insure that they are never guilty of the same thing.

2. The person will use their new found authority and life experiences to get a little pay back.

The reason that Rush and his ilk are so terrified of option #2 is that they know this would be their course of action should they find themselves in similar circumstances.

Don?t worry Rush. You should feel blessed that the real world is not made up of Rush Limbaughs.

Of Course he will always have ratings in a niche market....

What's so difficult to understand? Limbaugh, Beck, et al., are nothing but product, aimed at one niche market, disaffected and resentful white males screwed by globalization. No different than the way Hannah Montana is sold to 13-year-old girls. They will be allowed to continue as long as they are marketable to advertisers by the media outlets that carry their screeds.

I can't believe Rush is that gullible. Or maybe it's just another case of Obama's superior intelligence overpowering the peanut-sized brains running the GOP.

Lol..... Barry knows how to read a speech.

Well, with the death of Reagan and William F. Buckley, I'll have to agree with the current crop of GOP being essentially brainless. Probably the smartest of the living GOP politicos is Newt, but he's basically through politically (and has a less-than-stellar image due to problems in his personal life).

Even with his fairly frequent verbal gaffes, Obama still is capable of rational and concise thought. I happen to disagree with many of his policies, but can't find validity in any claims of Obama not being a very bright man.

Limbaugh is a millstone around the neck of the conservative movement, he cheapens it and furthers the divisiveness in our nation today. I listen to him off and on, just to keep tabs (O'Reilly surprised me by turning much more moderate towards the end of his radio days), and he spends 90+% of his time complaining / twisting things about the 'left/liberals', and virtually zero time extolling the logic of classical conservative political philosophy, or of any real positive things done by the GOP or conservatives.

A credible speaker for conservatism would do much better by the constituency by spending 90%+ of their time communicating the positive about their philosophy and original ideas, and (far) less than 10% picking fights with half the country.

While I agree with a lot of what you say I can't give Obama credit for being all that smart because he really hasn't accomplished much aside from winning an election against a very compromised candidate. He's a great lier and he is calm cool and collected when being confronted and that takes a special person(see Nancy Pelosi).

As far as divisiveness I'll give Limbaugh that but Obama is no better he talks of a new era in politics and bringing parties together while he is trashing Limbaugh, Bush and the GOP in the next breath. Obama has become a man of half truths with just about everything he says and the part of his speeches that aren't half truths have asterisks all over them.

I learned long ago that what I called half truths looked like truths after I had learned twice as much as I had earlier known.

As to Rush, good for him. He and the Senate will agree.

Rush is a moron, anyone can see that.
If he bases his now support of Sortabetterthanawhitemale on 1 issue like abortion it truely shows his stupidity.

Okay, that was funny!

So Rush is a single issue voter now? Just when I thought he couldn't be more stupid he proves me wrong. :disgust:

This is exactly the point he was making. It's called satire. And you fell for it, hook, line, and sinker!

Bullshit. don't act like this is some kind of high-minded political satire. Listen to the clip. He wouldn't be making nuanced statements of potential support nor point out that she's a catholic if he's trying to be satirical.

So true. I couldn't take listening to what I already knew to be true a hundred years ago. I didn't need some idiot to tell me I am right. I know I am. I don't want to be a sheep in a herd. As a giant of a man already, I don't need some turd like Rush pumping my ass full of air to make me feel bigger. Rush is for tiny people who don't amount to anything on their own.

If they do, it's clearly a much smaller one, since they're having financial issues and were forced to file for bankruptcy. The most popular show on Air America has about 1/10th of the listeners Rush Limbaugh has...and Rush isn't the only one making big money off it. On the radio, on TV, there seem to be a never ending supply of right-wing blowhards, and while most right-wingers on THIS forum claim that nobody pays any attention to the talking heads, clearly enough people do. The market for left-wing blowhards seems to be much smaller. Even Al Franken, who probably came the closest to Rush on the left-wing side of things (NOT a compliment) had to go try to get a REAL job in politics instead of just commenting on it because his show couldn't attract listeners.

This isn't about one side being better or smarter, but for whatever reason the Rush Limbaugh niche simply doesn't seem to exist on the left, while it occupies a lot of space on the right. I suspect a big part of this is the widely held belief that "the media" is out to get conservatives, thus the need for alternative voices.

Edit: On the other side of the coin, HUMOROUS political commentary, a la The Daily Show, seems much more popular for liberals than conservatives. Jon Stewart's humorous liberal commentary on current events is hugely popular, and not just among liberals. The similarly themed right-wing news parody, Fox News Channel's "The 1/2 Hour News Hour" was incredibly UNpopular and was very short lived. This is a niche that seems to exist almost entirely on the left for some reason. My theory is that conservatives just aren't very funny. ;)
