...is it too big? Will it fit in my pockets? Will someone steal it? Can I take it to the beach? Will the battery die? Will a better one/revision come out soon? Will I get service? ACK!

So scared.

Hold me.

I recently switched from the consistent 98.6deg potpourri-scented mucus-filled cocoon that was my Verizon plan.

Few things:

-here in D.C. only Verizon works underground in the subways. it is annoying but expected as it is common knowledge around here.

-In outlying areas when you go out of 3g- to edge-coverage areas the call drops.

-I've had more than a dozen dropped calls that occur when dialing or receiving calls, and even during calls (even when stationary). In sharp contrast, when in NYC I only had about 2 dropped calls and great reception.

That said, I like the nighttime and rollover opportunities. In addition, as long as I am near the city (usually the case) I get very good coverage, and the 3G speeds are very respectable (1.5Mbps).

In the end, had it been any other phone I would have been "peeved" to say the least. With great 3G coverage the iphone can breathe and everything from YouTube to the browser made up for att?s (or apple/Infineon?s) shortcomings.

As long as the coverage is good and you are prepared for a few hiccups and horrible battery life, you'll be happy.

Yea.. using 3G just kills the battery, but this is the best cellphone that I have owned. 😀

I recommend, if you don't have great 3G support in your area, to just leave it on EDGE, and then switch over to 3G when you need quicker data access.

Also, I switched from Verizon to AT&T and I am much happier with the iPhone on AT&T than I was with my Samsung U740 on Verizon. I know it's two different experiences, but still...

No its not to big, if you let someone steal it the ywill. Beach no, yes batteries die, yes a new one will come out next year, service? I dunno will you get service? I guess if you pay, but dont expect 3g if its not in your area..

I took my iphone 3G to the beach down in San Diego with no issues .. . we had a group though so it wsa never unattended. I honestly believe the iphone will change the way you see a cellphone. I often find myself watching tv and surfing online on my phone . . . no need to boot up the computer anymore. That being said, don't expect it to be perfect. . . it takes a few more steps to access the phone functions and since the opening of the platform to 3rd party apps, the phone will crash every once in awhile but the posibilities offered by the apps make the tradeoff worth it.

So far the only complaints I have are a). it's TOO nice. I'm afraid to take it anywhere, do anything with it. I guess I need one of those "skins" and b). some serious lag when I boot my contacts up. There's only like 150 or so, but the iPhone really doesn't like it.

Everything else is great. The texting, the email, the browser. ALthough I think I might be the only person in the world who got a 16 gig iPhone and who hasn't put a single song/movie/show/ebook on there, and who really doesn't have any inclination to do so.

I like keeping my phone naked when I use it, yet protected when in my pocket. Check out http://www.foofshop.com

I got mine a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. It is perfect for my needs.

Prices are in AUD, so at $26 AUD shipped you only playing about $22 USD 🙂

I started to get the contact lag after the latest update. Hopefully Apple will address it in the next update.

I'd like to hear about your experience with 3G. Please be sure to post after you have more time with it.

The 2.1 update is supposed to fix the lag, it will also fix the dropped calls when it swaps from the 3 3g antennas to the single edge antenna (apple screwed up the firmware for it initially). They are also going to be improving the 3g reception (again, their mistake, new antenna and I guess they didn't have long enough to get to know it) and with 2.0.2 it no longer hard reboots due to 3rd party app crashes.

Its getting better. Still some nuances and some missing flair or features that make other cell phones more phonelike (voice dialing / in call recording / copy paste or reusing old text for txt messages / mms) but I think some of this is coming in the future.

I find the 3g battery life is fine unless you are acessing data (ie browsing) and in that case I suggest finding a 3rd party app to help ie I love digg.com so Shovel is great since it doesnt need to get data as much (the graphics are in the app ie local so no need to download them each time ) and things like movies app or box office are great for finding movie times and watching trailers.

Some tips to improve battery life that I use with my phone.

-turn off fetch data (and push if you dont have mobile me/exchange/yahoo mail)
-turn off the ask to join networks with wifi (and turn off wifi if you arent near any)
-turn off bluetooth if you arent using it
-turn down the brightness (the new 3g phones have much brighter and more contrast screens then last gen. I compared them before I sold my 1st gen phone, the brightness slider all the way down on 3g was the same as about 20% on the 1st gen)
-if your playing games in the subway and dont get signal anyway, put it in airplane mode (kills all the antennas)
-dont play 3d games unless you are going to be near a charger soon heh (though Aurora Feint is pretty addictive)
-Set it to auto lock the screen after 1 minute (or whatever you think is necessary)
-dont let the battery run completely dry (some debate here, but the new batteries dont like that, they loose capacity when drained completely, you dont need to calibrate them. Charging it each night really helps)
-I find it helps to turn off some of the sounds (keyboard clicks and lock/unlock noise) so you arent powering the speaker constantly while typing. That or flip the silent switch (the typing clicks tend to annoy people around you heh).
-use edge for calls if you can stomach it, last twice as long as 3g (only as good as the weakest link imho so if they have shotty reception always, then edge should be fine.)
-last but not least, try not to show it to everyone who walks by, those demos of how great it is will really drain the power.

There's tons of cool little "tricks" when doing things with the phone that made me kind of go "nice..." when i figured them out.

They are:
-double tap areas to zoom in (instead of the pinch pull method)
-tap/double tap with two fingers to zoom out.
-hold down keys on the keyboard for more options like accents or in the case of the .com button it gives you .org and others
-double tap space bar to add a period (may need to be turned on in options.)
-double click the home button for favorites or ipod controls if you're in an app or the phone is locked. (will give you quick access to play/pause volume, next, and back.)

enjoy.

I think the problem with the 3G is AT&T. They have seemed to fix it though here recently. I don't have disconnects anymore.

another shovel fan😀 my favorite app so far😀

So, I guess this is my first "iPhone" experience...went to best buy to get in on a monitor deal (they had it in stock, but they wouldn't give me the lower price, not that I tried all that hard).

So I load up Safari, go to anandtech, and get the model number (the 3G was pretty damn peppy). Talk to the CSR. Then I walk outside, hit up the google maps, have it locate me, search for "Best Buy", it gives me the number of the one I'm at. I call and talk to another CSR. Bam bam bam. Sorta like the commercials.

That was pretty slick, honestly.

And this thing must have the most powerful WiFi antenna known to man. I'll be driving on 6 lane streets through commercial areas (i.e. no really near an actual building) and it'll try and pick up WiFi signals. My Powerbook barely picks up the signal when I'm downstairs.

So far, no complains (other than it's already got some scratches on it, but it survived it's first drunk drop). So where's the best place to get one of those skin-films for it? And which is the best to get?

If you're coming from a regular-type phone, you should be more than happy with the extras the iPhone brings. If you're coming from a WinMo or Blackberry and actually used it for more than making phone calls, you will find the experience less than perfect but not BAD. It really depends on how you use the phone, but suffice it to say that IF CDMA coverage in my apartment was worth a damn, I would be rocking a Treo 800w right now.

As it is, I won't stay with AT&T after my two year contract for an iPhone. It's just not THAT worth it.

Still a nice device though. It just needs some work in the usability department.
