Samsung is producing 256Mb GDDR2 chips now... They're saying they'll be able to produce video cards with 512MB of ram.

WTH do we need that kind of ram in video cards for? Most new games only "require" 32MB... meaning they'll play good on 64 and great on 128.

I can't imaging game companies are going to jump on this band wagon of producing games with so much graphics in them people will be "required" to have minimum of 128MB vid cards... and recommend 256-512.... not in 5 or 6 years at least.

That's just a BOAT LOAD of graphics man!!!

Of course, with the popularity of MMOn-Line games... it opens the doors for more customizable characters??

Who here would BUY a 512MB video card?

IF MMORPGs get better as a result then more people will play them causing the subscription costs to go down allowing me to play them.

It's all good as far as I'm concerned. :)

I do not think its a question of needing that much video ram. Its more a question of how many would pay to have it. Plus an added benefit is that when we finnally do need that much video ram it will already be common place. I know people that will pay up to a 50% price premium to get a 5% performance increase.

just wait. as soon as the cards come out. there will be a new game that will take advantage of all that power.

There's a game that takes advantage of 256MB?

If they put a HARD DRIVE on a video card, some swinging dick with more money than sense would buy it! :D

Why would you do that? Its infeasible, even if you somehow do get 2GB of Video memory, its stiill stupid.

Derisive laughter from the same board that likes to tell people they need a gig of system RAM? Curious.

I think the comment you quoted was facetious. Note the *wink*. :)

Sometimes 1GB+ of RAM does help. And not all computing tasks revolve around gaming, sometimes 1GB is barely enough.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That said, I believe 512MB of RAM on a video card is a sick idea and waste of $$$ right now. Maybe in a few years but I'm sure there will be a few "I've gotta have the biggest bestest fastest" people to get one.

video games are not the only thing that video card are used for... i agree 256mb on a video card for an avid gamer is not need let alone 512, but there are other tasks 512 would be nice. but just like the card manufactures I would be glad to suck a few extra bucks from suckers that buy them for gaming.

And when is this true in computing? You make it sound like software is up to par with hardware....which is hardly the case in consumer level computing.

I'm sure there will be a day sometime when 512MB is needed, but software developers are still struggling to use advanced DX8/9 features, and as pointed out, 256MB is hardly needed now.

This will probably be the first time we see someone with more video ram than they do have system ram...

I just KNOW there will be some SAP out there that will buy one and have 256MB of system ram.

bwahahahahaha... :D

I really liked the joke about loading the entire game into video memory. I'm sure the CPU would love that! :)

I still have a 32MB card (yes, it's a bit old I know) and don't have "too many" problems...

512MB video memory just baffles me...

It makes me think there has to be better ways to spend on R&D than Bigger, Bigger, Bigger!!!
