I agree, but it didn't look like an expensive game to produce.

This is what I am saying. Its incredibly short, the graphics are cool in an arty sense but it couldnt have required advanced technology to produce.

It must have been actor salaries.

This is a nice approach, but I wonder how repeatable it is. Over a million dollars the first time, how much would people spend if there were 25 games like this?

Reputation.... if 25 others tried to do the same, would it work?

Im pretty sure I wouldnt support some new first person shooter / action RPG crap everyone else is already makeing.

If a Big name in the gameing industry said, I want to make a turn based story driven, open world RPG (not some action rpg crap),
but I cant get funding..... would it work? I think so.

Publishers *force* game studios to make ACTION RPGs... because they dont think theirs a big enough market space for turn based ones....
So we never see turn based story driven RPGs anymore. Same as Adventure games, or hell even platform games.

Who doesnt want to see a platform game like DonkeyKong Country or Super Mario? there are to few of those types of games made.
Same with Adventure games, there just not made anymore.
And again with Turn based RPGs.... where is Baldurs Gate III? or Icewind Dale III? Planescape Tormet II? a new CronoTrigger?

they killed Fallout >_> makeing it a first person shooter..... made me -> sad panda.
Even SqureSoft has abandoned us, makeing FinalFantasy games that are Action RPGs o_O

Moral of story?
Games should be more than just 2 catagories of either "first person shooter" or "action RPG".
People grow tired of the same thing over and over again.

thats why we need publishers to not force game studios, into fitting into some mold.
We need adventure games, Turn based RPGs, platform games ect to be made as well.

It could happen!

Obsidian have decided to put the feelers out for funding a game through Kickstarter. Through a post on their forums, the developer has suggested player-supported funding means certain genre of games definitely aren’t dead, and sequels that otherwise wouldn’t happen possibly could.

The suggestion has certainly got gamers talking, and an RPG seems to be topping the bill for most requested game. Although Neverwinter and Star Wars demonstrate Obsidian have the talent and experience to deliver such a game, it’s another title that brings with it the most excitement.

The reason for the excitement is Chris Avellone, Creative Director at Obsidian. Before Obsidian he worked at Black Isle Studios and was lead developer on Planescape: Torment. The suggestion now is we could see a sequel of sorts to that game. Even if it’s not a direct sequel, a game similar in spirit to PT is sure to go down very well with RPG fans and would certainly get a lot of funding through Kickstarter.

Baldurs Gate ended. It doesnt need any more parts. What we do need is another good game that is similar to Baldurs Gate. And we never got it. And never will. You better leech all the fun you can from Planescape and Icewind Dale, cuz thats all you'll ever get.

Well, does that mean we could get a legit sequel to Syndicate, rather than this garbage bullshit that is being released soon?

Watch the turn based reboot of X-Com. If it makes money we might see a real reemergence of games like Syndicate (with Syndicate being the obvious place to start). I think that if it fails, so will the entire idea of making anything that is not already a proven money maker, meaning, yearly sports updates, post WW2 FPS, and Me Too Action RPGs.

I kind of like the concept in general. It's like patronage (what allowed for most of the awesome art during the Renaissance), but distributed over a large group. It'll be cool to see if something like this is successful/spreads.

Shameless bumping of thread, project still has 20days to go, and the more adventure fans see the thread the better for the project.

I really hope the game they put out is as impressive as Grim Fandango was.

Also Adventure games for PC is dead? that explains the 62,000+ people that already bought a copy
(of a game that hasnt even gone into development yet).

Well, let's be honest here. Take the major games that are coming out these days. They've got budgets on the order of $100 million and are expected to sell millions (Mass Effect 2 sold over 2 million its first week). I've looked a bit into the stuff that Tim Schafer has been saying because I was interested in the budgets for other games. Psychonauts was on the order of $10 million and even for the smaller titles that Double Fine has put out like Stacking ($2 millions) are multimillion.

I think the problem here is that the expected budgets for even modest games have grown incredibly in the past twenty years. Few publishers are going to be willing to invest in a market that is as small as adventure games. I think Telltale got away with it because they did a few non-adventure games and franchises (CSI) as safe investments in addition to doing episodic gaming which allowed for smaller initial investments.

The problem doesn't seem to be that adventure games are dead, its that there are embarrassingly more profitable genres and styles of gameplay out there now.

But look at how many of those big budget games fail to make back their money. They are a big risk facing lots of competitors.

Adventures games are a niche market, with little competition that doesn't cost a lot of money to get into.

They put up a preproduction discussion between Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert. They also added some more awards to some of the Kickstarter tiers.

It ends in about 5 hours. I bit the bullet and donated $100. Getting the big box copy of the game was too tempting.
