Lights on but no ones home?

I just went to upgrade the heatsink on my cpu with a xigmatek 1283. I installed it fine but the system will no longer boot. I have not changed any of my hardware other than the heatsink and I've tried resetting the bios, reseating the heatsink, putting my previous heatsink on, trying 3 different fans, and nothing works.

I have noticed that it will normally take a couple seconds for the cpu fan to actually come on, when I installed the 1283 the first time the system just sat there with no post and the fan did not come on. After about 10 seconds I caught on and turned it off quickly. After reseating the 1283 it was the same result.

I put my other heatsink back on and the 6 cpu led lights come on for about 3 seconds and then they all shut off except the one at the bottom then the system shuts down and keeps restarting. Does this indicate that my motherboard or cpu has gone bad? Everything was perfectly fine before I went to install this new heatsink. As I said the system was working perfectly for about 3 weeks but I wanted to have a heatsink with more cooling power. I did notice some damage on the cpu, there are pictures below. I made sure the cpu was flush in the socket and oriented properly when I installed it.

I should also add that I got the dark knight version so the screw in backplate for the 775 socket is metal, could this have shorted out and fried my board/cpu?

I emailed intel and gigabyte but they haven't gotten back to me. My hardware is in my sig.

It does have insulation on it right? Cause if you have metal backplate directly to the board, yes it will short something.

It came with double sided tape which I heard was impossible to get off once it's on, so without thinking I slapped the backplate on without insulating it. I know dumb, so now that it has obviously shorted out does that mean the board is dead?

*sigh* ya it looks like 3 of the pins on the boards socket and the cpu have been fizzled cause they look darker than the rest. Hopefully I can RMA both but I doubt it...

Can you try the vendor where bought it?

I wish, newegg has a short replacement time for cpus and boards, like a week on the cpu and 30 days for the board and I'm past that. I had a plastic backplate on it too from my other heatsink, I don't know why I didn't just leave the board in the case and use it.

I guess if they don't take pity on me and replace them it's back to my skt 939 system.

you really need to insulate the backplate from the board it probably fried the mobo, possibly the CPU as well, i would try the CPU in another system and see if it works, if so then you only need a new mobo.

You do realise that you have a bent pin in the socket shown here:

Try bending it back very carefully - do not disturb the other pins.

Edit: Also looks as if there is a blackening of the socket by the 8th pin up from the bottom and 3rd pin in from the right. It could be just the photo though. If not, then MB could be cream crackered (knackered).

ya it's not the picture, the back plate shorted out the board and the board fried the cpu so those pins are actually blackened. Intel thankfully is going to replace the cpu for me, gigabyte is another story. I'm not sure if they replace motherboards with this type of damage. I traded some other gear for another motherboard here on anandtech. Intel said they'd get the replacement cpu to me 3-4 business days after they receive it, gigabytes turn around time is 3 weeks. So I should be back up and running in another week, that will gimmi time to get some other things done anyway :); At least I learned something from the experience, as dumb and obvious as it seems now.

And yes the pin is also bent, the intel support technician pointed that out to me as well. Guess I shoulda left well enough alone.
