No, a direct hit will still destroy the electronics, but they might help with indirect hits.

Yeah not much can protect against direct, but if it's like the hydro line coming in, then should be good? I'm guessing the cheap ones no, but I would hope the whole house ones yes.

When I finish building the rest of my server room I want to add one before the sub panel. I also need to protect my cable TV and phone lines... I should really get on that. You need to protect everything, if you miss one thing, then it's totally pointless.
